October Encounter with Christ Retreat: Palanca, Please
Thirty-seven students will be attending the October Encounter with Christ Retreat, along with 22 student leaders, from October 24-26, according to Beth Barsotti, campus ministry. Faculty and staff are asked to consider writing a note (palanca) to students they know who will be participating. This is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca.
Please do not discuss this concept with students to keep it a surprise. A list of students who are going on the retreat can be found at www.up.edu/campusministry/palanca. Please submit your palanca to the Pilot House campus ministry office or St. Mary’s. Mark your envelope with “Encounter Retreat—(student’s name)” and bring it by Thursday, October 23.

Faith and Formation Ambassador Program
A new program was launched this fall to bring intentional student leadership around faith and community to the University’s residence halls. The Faith and Formation Ambassador Program is a redesign of the Faith & Leadership House that had existed on campus since 2006. Rather than placing student leaders in a single community home, this new program seeks to integrate them into the residence hall communities to foster the Christian community of the University of Portland within the context of each hall.
In the program’s inaugural year, there are 14 students serving as faith and formation ambassadors across campus, within at least one in each residence hall. Through the collaboration of the theology department, residence life, the Moreau Center, and campus ministry, faith and formation ambassadors are supported in their charge to “actively and critically grow in faith, build community within a particular residence hall and throughout the University, and serve others.” Faith and formation ambassadors also participate in a required one-credit course, Theology 347, which provides them the opportunity to reflect critically and theologically on the service they are providing in the halls.

Spiritual Companionship at UP
Rev. Jeffrey Coooper, C.S.C., theology, and Beth Barsotti, campus ministry, will present “Introduction to Spiritual Companionship” on Thursday, September 11, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bauccio Commons Teske Room. Please feel free to bring your lunch.
Faculty and staff members are invited to learn more about spiritual companship, and to consider being a part of this ministry at the University of Portland. Walking with one another on the spiritual journey of life is something we do in our roles as faculty, staff, parents, and friends. Perhaps you are already walking with someone in this way, or it is something you would like to do. Even if you are unsure of your availability to students, you are invited to join simply for your own growth.

From Our Past: Fr. James Fogarty, C.S.C.
Father James A. Fogarty, C.S.C., died on July 7, 1965, at age 66. He had served at the University from 1926 to 1964 as a professor of economics and was still living in Christie Hall at the time of his death. Some years earlier he had established, from his personal patrimony and from other gifts, a fund to be used for the building of a chapel at the University. There had long been chapels in buildings such as West (now Waldschmidt) Hall, Christie Hall, the old Commons (now St. Mary’s Student Center) but never a stand-alone building designed exclusively as a chapel. It was his idea that the proper investment of even a small fund could in time grow to sufficient size and value to make the construction of a chapel possible. His dream was realized in 1986 when his successor as trustee of the fund, Fr. James Anderson, C.S.C., laid before University president Fr. Thomas Oddo, C.S.C., an account of the fund’s value in excess of $600,000. Shortly thereafter, the board of regents authorized the building of the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.
