New Fall 2023 Elective: Palliative and End-of-Life Care Across the Disciplines
NRS 492 will be a unique opportunity for undergraduate students from multiple departments to collaborate. They will learn about palliative care and how it can improve quality of life for people living with chronic illness. The goal will be for them to analyze and understand palliative care through the lens of their own academic discipline, while they learn from one another. Check out this video for a helpful visual/description of palliative care.
The course will be offered online on Wednesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be taught by Andra Davis (davisa@up.edu) and Kristine Dukart-Harrington (harringk@up.edu) from the School of Nursing & Health Innovations. Please contact us if you have any questions. Department program counselors can help get students registered!
April Zoom Announcement
The time has come for one last update for the school year. Please see our Techtalk Blog for the April 2023 Announcement! We wish you a wonderful rest of the Spring 2023 term and hope that your summer gets off to a great start!
Summer Course Reserves
Planning to teach this summer? Get some of your course prep out of the way! Library staff are ready to set up course reserves for summer classes! Course reserves can be online or print items and films you wish to make available to your students. We also help you with copyright screening and scan materials to meet accessibility standards. Faculty often request that we scan chapters from print books for electronic reserve, but please note we are restricted to one chapter or 10% of an entire book.
If you plan to use items previously on course reserves, please go ahead and state it under the “Additional Information” section on the course reserves form to facilitate the process. For new items, please fill out as much information as possible on the form. Questions? Email library@up.edu or call 503.943.7111.
Scheduling Library and Digital Lab Sessions for Summer
The Clark Library offers instruction in two areas: information literacy and multimedia skills. Now is a great time to schedule a session for summer!
Librarians teach information literacy sessions and collaborate with faculty to make sure key concepts are covered. To schedule a class meeting, please email reference@up.edu with your preferred dates and times. Librarians also create tutorials and online course guides to support students in their academic research and projects. To discuss resources available for students in your course, email reference@up.edu.
The Digital Lab coordinator can advise on creating multimedia assignments and instruct classes that have projects such as creating videos, podcasts, digital posters, and digital photography. Email José Velazco to arrange multimedia instruction through the Digital Lab.

Please Load Scholarly Activity on the Portal (by May 31)
Faculty members are reminded to load their scholarly activity on the portal in PilotsUP by May 31 each year. Data obtained through the portal will be used to populate A Community of Scholars, published by the Provost’s office. Faculty members use their school’s report on the home tab of the Scholarly Activity Portal to send the data to their respective deans as a part of annual self-evaluation.
You can find the link to the Scholarly Activity Portal in the Academic menu of PilotsUP or you can go directly to this link.
For any questions about loading your scholarly activity in PilotsUP please contact the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement at scholars@up.edu.
Apply For Sabbaticals (by Jun. 15)
Applications for sabbaticals for the 2024–2025 academic year are due along with faculty development plans to faculty members’ respective deans by June 15, 2023. All materials including the letter from the Dean to the Provost are due to the Provost by September 1. Faculty eligible to apply for a sabbatical must have completed seven years of full-time teaching at the University of Portland or have completed at a minimum an additional seven years of full-time teaching since a previously funded University of Portland sabbatical.
Sabbatical requests are coordinated with departmental planning as well as the individual faculty member’s annual development plan. With careful planning the academic units have been able to take into consideration the needs of both the individual faculty member and the department or school. Additional information about sabbatical leaves can be found on page 44 of the Faculty Handbook.
For more information contact the provost’s office at 7105 or staten@up.edu.
