Sixth in the University museum’s “A Given Life” series is Rev. John Delaunay, C.S.C., a well-remembered University of Portland figure. His term as dean of men spanned the World War II era. Fr. Delaunay had a good rapport with students, imparting words of wisdom in the form of weekly and witty “Campus Bulletins.” His personal engagement with students continued throughout their lives, in letters to those serving in the armed forces, notes and postcards marking recognition on special occasions, and in solicitations for alumni donations for the University. Fr. Delaunay influenced both the character of the student body and the curriculum, founding the psychology department in 1949. The psychology program later stretched beyond the University to help others through an eponymous institute for clinical psychology.
