W. James Popham Lecture, Oct. 24

PophamSliderW. James Popham, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on educational assessment, teaching, and leading, will be the guest of the School of Education when he comes to campus for the Educational Leadership Network Symposium on Thursday, October 24. Popham will be sharing key recommendations for quality teacher evaluation programs and practices, important cautions, and how his insight relates to effectively implementing SB 290, a law passed in 2011 by the Oregon legislature. SB 290 is meant to strengthening expectations for educator evaluations and professional growth. His lecture, from 5 to 6 p.m., in Buckley Center auditorium, is free and open to all faculty and staff.

Popham is the author of more than 20 books and 300 articles and papers, including his new book Evaluating America’s Teachers: Mission Possible? The symposium is free to the educational community. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, delivered an invited presentation titled “Leading with Agility: Thriving Through Adaptive Collaboration” on July 8, 2025, for the University of Portland Staff Senate. Houglum also facilitated two leadership development workshops titled Leadership Reimagined: Identity, Influence, and Leading Through Deliberate Practice and Values in Action: Practicing Meaningful and Courageous Leadership for the University of Portland’s Pilots Pre-College Program.
