Kevin Jones, social work, completed the 32-hour Mental Health First Aid USA Instructor Course, and is now qualified to teach the 8-hour Adult Mental Health First Aid training. The MHFA course teaches skills for providing initial help to people experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders. The course took place in New Orleans, La., from February 26-28, 2018.
Lars Erik Larson, English, had his article “Quiet Violence in Willy Vlautin’s Novels,” published in the 2018 book Under the Western Sky: Essays on the Fiction and Music of Willy Vlautin (ed. Neil Campbell, U. Nevada P.). The essay explores versions of domestic violence in the first four novels of a Portland writer and singer (PDF available for the asking).
Lorretta Krautscheid, nursing, presented “Relationships between resilience and moral distress among student nurses,” a poster presentation with Laura Mood, Jessica Wode, Susan McLennon, and student co-presenters Taylor Mossman and Marie Wagner, at the National Nursing Ethics Conference, Los Angeles, Calif., March 2018.
Jennette Lovejoy, communication studies, had her article, “Three Decades of Reliability in Communication Content Analyses: Reporting of Reliability Statistics and Coefficient Levels in Three Top Journals” (with Brendan Watson, Stephen Lacy, and Daniel Riffe), nominated for Research Article of the Year, as voted on by the members of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The editorial review board of Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly will announce the final winner after March 31.
Ryan Kenton, biology, received a Murdock College Research Program for Natural Sciences grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. The grant title “Defining the Role of Two Newly Identified Proteins in the TonB System: A System Known to be Vital for Infectivity and Antibiotic Resistance of Pathogenic Vibrio Species.” Kenton is a microbiologist studying the human pathogen Vibrio vulnificus, an organism that is closely related to the organism that causes Cholera. The grant will fund Kenton and two undergraduate students each summer for the next three years.
