Holy Cross College in Notre Dame has appointed former UP president Rev. David Tyson, C.S.C., as its president for a five-year term. Fr. Tyson has served as interim president at Holy Cross since April 2017. Prior to taking the helm at Holy Cross, Tyson was director of nonprofit professional development at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. A Notre Dame graduate, Fr. Tyson also previously served as executive assistant to former ND president Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., and later served as vice president for student affairs. He was president of the University of Portland from 1990-2003 before becoming provincial superior of the Indiana Province of Holy Cross.
The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum has announced its 2017 class of inductees, which includes the 2002 University of Portland NCAA champion women’s soccer team. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honors Oregon’s athletic history with a museum and annual induction and awards ceremony. The Hall of Fame’s goal is to inspire participation in sport and foster awareness of the values and life-long rewards gained from this participation.
Laura Mood, nursing, worked for two weeks (May/June 2017) in Myanmar/Burma as a volunteer nursing education consultant for OHSU Casey Eye Institute’s SE Asia Collaboration initiative. Her work involved assessing the current educational program used for Eye Nurse Aid training, as well as the patient care practices delivered by Eye Nurse Aids at Tipitaka Eye Hospital in rural Myanmar. While there she presented an educational seminar titled “Patient education & medication safety” to 66 eye nurse aides and 100 eye nurse aide trainees. She formally presented to OHSU-CEI staff and leadership on her experiences and the work she did to improve the quality of patient care delivered by eye nurse aides. Mood is working on a research proposal and specific quality improvement projects related to this initiative and intends (with appropriate approvals) to involve baccalaureate nursing students in her efforts. Also in June 2017, Mood shared two papers via podium presentation at the Association for Medical Humanities (AMH) conference held at Keele University in England. The papers were titled “Narrative life history: An arts-informed method for understanding disability experience” and “Poetry as a means of exploring empathy in nursing education.”
Aziz Inan, engineering, published his article titled, “A numerical tribute to George Michael,” in The Archer, No. 281, p. 8, East Finchley, London, UK, August 2017. See the article here. Inan also wrote an article about palindrome dates expressed with two-digit year numbers and shared his article with the editor and owner of Fast Copy News Service, located in Atlanta, Ga., and as a result, portions of Inan’s article got published in the “Q&A on the News” column in the Metro section of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper in response to a reader’s question, “I noticed that 7/1/17 reads the same backwards and forward. After 8/18/18 and 9/19/19 when will this happen again?”, p. B3, July 16, 2017.
