Sharon Jones, engineering, attended the 2017 Global Grand Challenges Summit in Washington, D.C., July 18 – 20, 2017. She attended with Maggie Ryan ’19, computer science; Sofia Martinez ’19, civil engineering, and Graham Foster ’20, mechanical engineering. The 2017 summit is the third in a collaborative series sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It was held in conjunction with the inaugural K–12 FIRST Global Challenge. It focused on the four themes of the NAE Grand Challenges: Engineering: Sustainability, Health, Security, and Joy of Living, as well as education and public engagement.

The Board of Directors of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association has selected 30 undergraduate/pre-licensure and graduate students to receive the APNA Board of Directors Student Scholarship. University of Portland nursing student Kyle Doty ’19 is among the recipients selected from hundreds of applicants based on academic merit and dedication to psychiatric-mental health nursing.
Aziz Inan, engineering, wrote an article recently about palindrome dates expressed with two-digit year numbers and shared his article with the editor and owner of Fast Copy News Service, located in Atlanta, Georgia, and as a result, portions of Inan’s article were published in the Q&A on the News column in the Metro section of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper in response to a reader’s question, “I noticed that 7/1/17 reads the same backwards and forward. Stephanie Salomone, mathematics, has been awarded a $300,000, 3-year NSF grant to improve STEM teaching on the Bluff. She will be joined in the project by Valerie Peterson (math), Carolyn James (math), Eric Anctil (education), Tara Prestholdt (biology), and Heather Dillon (engineering).

Barbara Braband, Rebecca Gaudino, and Anissa Rogers recently learned that they are the recipients of the 2017 Innovative Teaching in Social Work Education Award, a national teaching award given jointly by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and SAGE Publishers. The three of them have been collaborating the last several years on pedagogical methods and research, and submitted that work for the award. It will be presented at the Annual Program Meeting for CSWE in October, where they will give a workshop on their project.
Tammy VanDeGrift, engineering, presented a paper “Helping First-Year Engineering Students Select a Major” (with co-author Sherry Liao) at the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, June 2017. VanDeGrift and Caitlin Cairncross, engineering, presented a poster “Using Assessment to Continuously Improve the Retention & Persistence of At-Risk Engineering Students” (with co-author Sharon A. Jones) at the NSF grantees poster session at the same conference.
Sr. Angela Hoffman. O.S.B., chemistry, attended the Northwest Regional American Chemical Society meeting in Corvallis at OSU on July 25-28. She organized the student poster session, served as organizer and presider at the “Breakthroughs in analytical chemistry & natural products” symposium, and presented “Antibiotics by soil actinomycetes from an ancient Roman archeological site,” coauthored with Ed Valente.
