Stephanie Salomone, mathematics and engineering, and Tara Prestholdt, biology, planned and facilitated an institute for the faculty of Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME, on the use of the REFLECT peer observation protocols for formative assessment of teaching. Faculty participants came from all five divisions of MMA, including the Marine Transportation Deck and Engine faculty, allowing for a new context in which to test these protocols. Salomone was also an invited panelist on the Equity Is… podcast hosted by EquityLabs out of the University of Denver. “Equity is Engineered: tackling the theory that says our systems are not broken, they are working exactly the way they were built. Since we engineer our systems and processes, what better place to start looking at the systems we engineer than STEM education?” With guests: Stephanie Salomone, Courtney Ngai, and Shayla Sawyer, hosted by Ashley Hill. In her role as Associate Director of Project NExT for the Mathematical Association of America, Salomone gave four presentations at the Project NExT workshop in Philadelphia, PA. Her focus was on active-learning strategies for higher-ed mathematics instruction. The presentations were the following: Different Interactive Teaching Methods—Based on the IP Guide (with Dr. Trish Hammer, Virginia Tech and Dr. Alicia Prieto Langarica, Youngstown State University); Interactive Teaching Session; Got Questions?; and Making Teaching Matter More: Active-learning Strategies and Barriers to Implementation.
