Amelia Ahern-Rindell, biology, and research student Christina Buselli ’22, were highlighted in the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) November Newsletter about their collaborative research together (UP is an institutional member of CUR). In the laboratory, this faculty-student team is using the gene-editing technique known as CRISPR to help characterize a sheep model of the fatal genetic disorder known as GM1 Gangliosidosis. They are also working on a related project to explore the ethical application of CRISPR funded by the UP Dundon-Berchtold Ethics Institute. The hope is that this work will eventually lead to a treatment in humans that is ethically grounded, based on societal input, well-thought out gene therapy guidelines, and appropriate governmental policy.

Corey Pressman, nursing, presented a talk called “Vitality Toolkit” at the Oregon Health Care Association (OHCA) Annual Meeting on November 10, 2021. He also conducted the workshop “Green Ideas: The Haiku Way and Narrative Competence” at the Northwest Narrative Medicine Collaborative facilitator training on October 30, and he had artwork selected for inclusion in the Verum Ultimum Art Gallery Eighth Annual Abstract Catalyst show.
Amber Vermeesch, nursing, participated in a study, conducted by Study.com, centered around providing current and prospective nursing students advice on navigating their degree path and exploring career options in the field.
Michael Prendergast, theology and performing arts, is a contributor to Guide For Liturgy Committees, Liturgy Training Publications, LTP. The second edition of this book was recently released.

Sarina Saturn, psychological sciences and gender, women, & sexuality studies, presented at the Oregon Counseling Association conference in Ashland, Oregon, November 11-13, 2021. Her presentation was entitled, “Situating the Intergenerational Trauma of Families in the Present-Day Counseling of Clients.”

Corey Pressman, nursing, had a short story of his performed by professional actors in a virtual event hosted by Arizona State University’s Center for Science and the Imagination on November 17, 2021. The story. “Divided Light” is a piece of optimistic climate fiction and was published in the science fiction anthology “The Weight of Light: A Collection of Solar Futures.”
Simon Aihiokhai, theology, presented “Unspoken Rules for Success in College.” A panel discussion on college experience for first generation college students (FGEN), organized by Shepard Academic Resource Center, University of Portland. Aihiokhai also presented “What Stories Do Our Bodies Tell in the Spaces They Occupy?, a lecture given to students registered in the course, Aim for Excellence, and “Finding Oneself through Encounters with the Less-Privileged,” a lecture given to students registered for the Spring 2022 immersion program, organized by the Moreau Center for Service and Justice.
Two faculty members from international languages and cultures participated in a panel entitled “Spain, Portugal, and Latin America: Jewish Culture and Literature in Trans-Iberia” at the Pacific and Ancient Modern Language Association (PAMLA) conference November 11-12 in Las Vegas. Maria Echenique presented “Verónica Ormachea’s Los Infames: Portrayal of an Unknown Chapter in Bolivia’s History” and Matthew Warshawsky presented “From Christian Spain to 1600s Jewish Amsterdam: The Literary and Spiritual Journey of Miguel (Daniel Leví) de Barrios.”
