The University of Portland co-sponsored the third annual New Columbia Health Fair, “Love Your Body, Everybody,” at the Charles Jordan Community Center on Saturday, April 5, according to faculty sponsor Barbara Braband, nursing.
Approximately ten UP nursing students participated in planning, implementing, and evaluation of the event, and worked with 13 community vendors including New Seasons, Red Cross, and Legacy Health Systems. Activities included a book signing of the late Charles Jordan’s book, More than Just Fun and Games, which was overseen by Dion Jordan, Mr. Jordan’s son. The elder Jordan, the community center’s namesake, died on Friday, April 4, one day prior to the health fair. He transformed the community through his passion and belief in land conservation and the Portland Parks and Recreation programs. Many of the health fair participants attended the fair to pay respects to Mr. Jordan’s family and staff at the fair.
Other offerings included health screenings and health information; health promotion activities including food demonstrations and safety education sessions for children’s bike safety; a bike raffle; children’s activities; and more. UP nursing faculty who participated include Patty Cox, Fran Simmons, Amelia Ferrel, and nursing dean Joanne Warner. Other sponsors included Village Gardens, Portland Parks & Recreation, and the City of Portland.
