University of Portland will welcome the second largest class in school history this week when the Class of 2020 arrives on campus for Orientation. Approximately 960 new freshmen are expected to begin classes this fall.
The UP Class of 2020 is highly academically accomplished, with an approximate average SAT score of 1192 and average high school GPA of 3.65.
Some pre-Orientation activities begin on Tuesday, August 23. International students will participate in the three-day Ohana program, and more than 100 incoming freshmen will participate in the annual Service Plunge August 23-25. They will volunteer at Cesar Chavez School, American Red Cross, Roosevelt High School, Harper’s Playground and Arbor Lodge Park, Peninsula School, Astor School, Friends of Trees, Rebuilding Center, and Saint Andre Bessette and Holy Cross Catholic Churches.
The bulk of the freshman class and new transfer students arrive on Thursday, August 25, when they move into their residence halls, beginning at 9 a.m. Orientation activities continue throughout the weekend.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the President’s Welcome at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 26, in the Chiles Center.
The 2016 Orientation Mass will take place on Saturday, August 27, at 5 p.m. in the Chiles Center. All faculty and staff are invited to attend to help welcome the newest members of the campus community. Faculty and staff participating in the academic procession at the beginning of the Mass should plan to arrive by 4:20 p.m. The academic procession will begin at 4:45 p.m.
