TLC From The TLC: On Teaching Students How to Learn Your Discipline

If professors are finding that students in class aren’t learning, one remedy is to make sure we’ve made time to teach them how. In this week’s Teaching & Learning post, Lars Erik Larson summarizes two easy ways we can make our assignments and our fields more accessible and transparent to undergraduates, particularly first-generation and non-traditional students.

Maureen Briare, Nursing & Health Innovations, published 2 liturgical compositions: The Fountain of Life Mass, which is a musical setting for all the sung parts within the Mass and is set for choir and instruments, as well as a choral piece entitled You Have Called Us, Lord, which is a song with themes of hope and justice. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, delivered an invited presentation titled “Leading with Agility: Thriving Through Adaptive Collaboration” on July 8, 2025, for the University of Portland Staff Senate. Houglum also facilitated two leadership development workshops titled Leadership Reimagined: Identity, Influence, and Leading Through Deliberate Practice and Values in Action: Practicing Meaningful and Courageous Leadership for the University of Portland’s Pilots Pre-College Program. July, 2025.
