All first-year students and their faculty guides will be spending time this week considering the Core Habit of Historical and Global Consciousness. Several readings and videos contribute to this conversation: Peter Stearn’s Why Study History?, Marlene Daut’s Inside the Kingdom of Hayti, “the Wakanda of the Western Hemisphere,’” its associated brief video The First King of Haiti, and a forum discussion of the global events that shaped our grandparents, our parents, and our own selves. This wraps up the first water-ski tour of the new Core Habits; the final seminar meeting will open up the question of how a UP education rooted in this Core Curriculum can form people equipped to bring the Catholic, Holy Cross charism of HOPE to our bruised, blessed world.
