Heighten Your Intercultural Understanding: “This Side of Home”

watson-renee-copy With Vision 2020, the University’s new strategic plan, the UP community seeks to enhance intercultural understandings, including attitudes, knowledge, and skills. To assist in this endeavor, the School of Education is hosting a reading group to probe culturally relevant practices and strategies.

This Side of Home, by Renée Watson (pictured), takes place in Portland, and explores the experiences of young African Americans in an evolving city. A free copy of this book will be distributed to anyone who responds to this invitation and who agrees to participate (on a first-come, first-serve basis) by November 30.

Participants will read the first section of the book, “Summer,” pages 3-75, and meet in the Terrace Room on Wednesday, January 18, between 12:15 and 1 p.m., for a brown bag lunch and to discuss the reading. Three additional discussions are scheduled on Wednesdays between 12:15 and 1 p.m. on February 8, March 8, and April 5. Seats are limited; please RSVP to Sally Hood (hood@up.edu) no later than November 30.

CISGO Seed Grant Recipients

The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013-2014 CISGO Seed Grants, according to Kate Regan, international languages and cultures. The grants are for projects related to increasing international issues and learning on campus, and support faculty, staff, and student projects that increase international awareness and inter-cultural competency at the University of Portland and beyond. The awardees are:

David Fuentes, Nursing and Health Innovations, presented “Bridging the Skills across Human and Artificial Intelligence Coaching Strategies to Boost Peer-Coaching & Self-Coaching Skills.” Co-presenter: Dave Houglum, PhD. Lightning Session of the Catholic Higher Education and AI Conference at University of Portland. The session briefly highlighted some of the innovations concerning the use of AI in leadership coaching, practice/training, and coaching ongoing developmental growth. October, 2024. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, presented nine, one-hour invited leadership presentations for the European Leadership Programme in Brussels, Belgium. Houglum also provided individual leadership coaching sessions to many of the programme’s Fellows and to the staff of the Jesuit European Social Center (JESC). The European Leadership Programme draws emerging leaders from across Europe to participate in a five-month leadership development programme. October 12-16, 2024.
