Brian Doyle Wins Oregon Book Award

Brian Doyle, marketing and communications, has won the 2016 Leslie Bradshaw Award for Young Adult Literature for his novel, Martin Marten, as part of this year’s Oregon Book Awards. The Oregon Book Awards are presented annually by Literary Arts, Inc. for “the finest accomplishments by Oregon writers who work in genres of poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, drama and young readers literature.” Doyle has been a finalist nine times, earning him notoriety as “the OBA Susan Lucci.” Suffice it to say that the award has been a long time coming, and is much deserved.

Oregon Book Award For Stolowitz

University of Portland adjunct drama instructor Andrea Stolowitz, performing and fine arts, won the 2013 Angus L. Bowmer Award for Drama as part of the 2013 Oregon Book Awards for her play, Antarktikos, according to PFA department chair Larry Larsen. Stolowitz is the first University of Portland faculty member to win an Oregon Book Award.

Stolowitz’s screenwriting work includes Jonathan’s War, a feature-length action film, the treatment for Code Name: Pelicano, which was sold to independent producers, and the upcoming six episode web-series Crackerjacks. A Walter E. Dakin Fellow at The Sewanee Writers Conference, Stolowitz has also been awarded residencies at Ledig House, Soapstone, and Hedgebrook, as well as arts grants from North Carolina, Oregon, and private foundations. Her plays include Bad Family, Seascapes, Playing the Course, Berlin Circles, Hotel Traumbad, and Geological Disturbances. Her latest play, Ithaka, premiers at Artist’s Repertory Theater in Portland on May 28, and runs through June 30.

Matthew Warshawsky, International Languages and Cultures, presented “‘A Woman So Perfect Keeping the Law’: The Crypto-Jewish Faith of Justa Méndez in Colonial Mexico.” The 34th Annual Conference of the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies (presented virtually). October 27, 2024.

David Fuentes, Nursing and Health Innovations, presented “Bridging the Skills across Human and Artificial Intelligence Coaching Strategies to Boost Peer-Coaching & Self-Coaching Skills.” Co-presenter: Dave Houglum, PhD. Lightning Session of the Catholic Higher Education and AI Conference at University of Portland. The session briefly highlighted some of the innovations concerning the use of AI in leadership coaching, practice/training, and coaching ongoing developmental growth. October, 2024. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, presented nine, one-hour invited leadership presentations for the European Leadership Programme in Brussels, Belgium. Houglum also provided individual leadership coaching sessions to many of the programme’s Fellows and to the staff of the Jesuit European Social Center (JESC). The European Leadership Programme draws emerging leaders from across Europe to participate in a five-month leadership development programme. October 12-16, 2024.
