A group of 71 Shiley School of Engineering students completed the April 2013 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) FE examination, according to Mojie Takallou, engineering. The FE exam is the first step in the process leading to the professional engineering ( P.E.) license. It is designed for students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree. Overall the University of Portland students scored a 93 percent passing rate. A group of 26 civil and environmental engineering majors passed with 96.2 percent; a group of 8 electrical engineering students had an 87.5 percent passing rate; and a group of 37 mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics students scored a 91.9 percent passing rate. University of Portland students were well ahead of the national average of 81 percent for civil engineering, 70 percent for electrical engineering, and 83 percent for mechanical engineering.
