Next Global Perspective Seekers Meeting (Oct. 11)

Thank you to those who joined the first Global Perspective Seekers meeting back in August. We had a brief discussion about the format of our upcoming meetings and shared what we wanted to accomplish in our lives related to global issues. We also agreed as a group that it would be fun to discuss this New Yorker article, “The Case Against Travel.” Thanks for the suggestion, Jose! Reading the article is not required to attend, and we will encourage those who do read the article to introduce some of the themes into conversation.

This group is formed so there will be a place where we can share and exchange our experiences on interacting with other cultures and living globally. If you know others who are interested in this issue, please feel free to let them know about GPS too.

Our meeting is now set for October 11, 2023.

Join Us for The Global Perspective Seekers (GPS) First Meeting (Aug. 16)

Greetings from the freshly formed affinity group of UP, the Global Perspective Seekers (GPS)!

Who are we?

Global Perspective Seeker is an affinity group to entice faculty and staff’s interest on issues surrounding the global communities. We want to strengthen the awareness of different aspects on issues globally and build community among staff and faculty with lived cross-cultural experience.

We open the participation to any faculty and staff member who lived in more than one country, and/or enjoy learning new perspective of other cultures.

Some of the group’s objectives include:

Create opportunities to share and discuss issues that happen in other parts of the world, and examine how opinions are formed.
Foster community amongst staff and faculty with cross-cultural experiences

Format

Monthly to bi-monthly meetings and discussions in casual settings for faculty and staff to participate. We will likely gather once monthly for a brown bag lunch, and once quarterly for a happy hour, this format will be flexible based on group feedback.

With that said, we are very excited to invite you to our first open meeting on Wednesday, August 16^th from noon to 1pm in the Diversity Center.

An American Dream—an opera by librettist/Portland Magazine editor, Jessica Murphy Moo, and composer Jack Perla—was produced by OperaLab Japan in Tokyo (November 2024) and Manhattan School of Music (December 2024).

Larry Larsen, Performing and Fine Arts, designed the scenery for this year’s production of Nordic Fire for the Portland Revels that is playing at the Alberta Abbey from December 13 through December 22. He also is designing the lighting for Lakewood Theatre Company’s production of The Maltese Falcon based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, which plays at the Lakewood Center in Lake Oswego from January 3 through February 9.

Lizhong Hao, Business, presented “The Impact of Auditor and Client Bargaining Power on Audit Pricing: A Two-Tier Stochastic Frontier Approach.” The 2024 Corporate Behavior and New Development of Financial Markets International Conference. Chongqing, China. November, 2024.

Simon Aihiokhai, Theology, was a discussant and participant at the International Congress on the Future of Theology ‘Legacy and Envisioning.’ Organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education. Vatican City. December 9–10, 2024. Aihiokhai was also a discussant and participant at the General Assembly of the International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology (INSeCT). Rome, Italy. December 8 – 13, 2024.

Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed the training requirements to be certified in the DiSC assessment on December 19, 2024. The DiSC assessment is a powerful tool that helps individuals and teams improve communication, collaboration, and workplace dynamics by providing insights into behavioral and communication styles.
