UP Winter Break Fire Systems Testing

December 8, 2025

Campus buildings will undergo annual fire alarm system testing and maintenance over winter break. Each building will be tested and will have a period of time when alarms are being activated. Building point persons have been notified. You may e-mail EHS if you plan to be working from our buildings during winter break and would like to know when your building is being tested.

Stryker Chair Training for UP Community (TBD)

November 10, 2025

EHS will host a Stryker chair training in November for those interested in learning how to use the chair. This training allows you to assist individuals who might need help evacuating from a building in an emergency. A course date will be scheduled pending input from interested participants.

Notice: Upcoming Fire Drills (Aug. 25-Sept. 5)

August 18, 2025

Fire drills will occur in all campus buildings at the beginning of the fall 2025 semester. Academic Building fire drills will be held the second week of school. Residence Hall drills will occur the first week of school, and non-academic buildings will have drills the first or second week of school. (Read More)

Required Annual Heat and Wildfire Smoke Training

As we prepare for summer, it is time to complete the Required Annual Heat and Wildfire Smoke Safety Training for 2025. We ask that you complete this 15 minute training, available for on Moodle, at your earliest convenience. Deadlines for completion of the training are: July 1, 2025 for Staff and September 1, 2025 for Faculty. (Read More)

Earth Day Cleanup at The SLUG (Apr. 23)

University of Portland—lets keep our neighborhood clean! We will meet at the Student Lead Unity Garden (SLUG) for this Earth Day event and everyone is welcome to join! We will fan out into the neighborhood and areas surrounding the university to pick up trash and litter. (Read More)

Reminder About Restricted Work Areas

Physical Plant and Environmental Health and Safety would like to remind you to pay attention to signage on campus such as barricades created by caution tape and signage indicating hazardous or restricted work areas. Restricted areas are closed for your safety and the safety of our facilities workers and contractors.

Three faculty members from International Languages and Cultures participated in the 122nd annual conference of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), November 20-23 in San Francisco. Verena Hutter presented “Embodied Memory: Holocaust Tattoos and Postmemory,” served as presiding officer of all three sessions of Austrian Studies, and chaired one of them. María Echenique presented “A Precursor of ‘Feminism from the Zulos’ by Dahlia de la Cerda” and served as presiding officer and chair of the session Spain, Portugal, and Latin America: Jewish Culture and Literature in Trans-Iberia. Matthew Warshawsky presented “A ‘Tenth Muse’ in 1600s Sephardic Amsterdam: Isabel Rebeca Correa, Translator, Poet, and Feminist” and served as presiding officer and chair of the Jewish Literature and Culture session. 

Andra Davis, Nursing & Health Innovations, published “Nursing faculty perceptions and Integration of primary palliative care content in undergraduate education: National and local institution assessments.” Co-authors: Lippe, M., Wolf, A., Cormack, C.
