Five Pilots Earn WCC All-Academic Team Honors

baseballPortland Pilots pitchers Chad Kjemhus and Jackson Lockwood and outfielder Chet Thompson have been named to the 2014 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team. Portland junior infielders Cody Lenahan and Caleb Whalen each nabbed all-academic honorable mention, giving the Pilots a total of five players honored by the WCC. Kjemhus, who also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention, graduated in May with a degree in marketing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.42. Thompson, also a senior who graduated last month with a 3.62 GPA, earned a mathematics degree while minoring in economics. He earned conference all-academic honors as a junior as well. Lockwood is a sophomore with a 3.48 GPA and is working towards a business degree. Both Lenahan and Whalen are marketing majors with GPAs of 3.30 and 3.27, respectively. Lenahan and Whalen both landed on the WCC’s 2013 All-Academic Team as sophomores last season.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team. Honors For Student Athletes

baseballawardAthletic trainer Greg Waltner, strength coach Cat Wade, and Pilot baseball players Ryan Barr and Travis Pederson were honored at Portland Fire & Rescue’s 2013 Award Ceremony, which was held on Thursday, May 30. Each member of the UP contingent was awarded a Certificate of Merit for their role in helping save the life of Pilots senior pitcher JR Bunda when he went into cardiac arrest after training on December 10, 2012.

Four Portland Pilots rowers were recently named as National Scholar Athletes, announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Molly Donahue, Sarah Donohoe, Jamie Opra, and Jessica Osborn were each recognized by the CRCA. Donahue and Opra also landed on the WCC’s All-Academic Team, while six other rowers received all-academic honorable mentions.

Pilots senior first baseman Brian Frattali and senior third baseman Jeff Melby were named to the 2013 All-West Coast Conference First Team, while five Pilots total were honored. Senior catcher/designated hitter Ben Grubb and sophomore second baseman Cody Lenahan each landed all-conference honorable mention, while right-hander Billy Sahlinger was named to the league’s all-freshman team.
