Susan Moscato, former associate dean and interim dean of the School of Nursing, was honored at a dinner celebration on Friday, July 18 for her leadership in adapting the nation’s first Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) ten years ago.
The celebratory dinner was hosted for the partners from Providence Health and Services, Portland Veterans Affairs, and Marquis Companies, who were early DEU collaborators with the School of Nursing. The honor presented to Moscato is called the “University of Portland School of Nursing Dr. Susan Randles Moscato Excellence in Innovation Award.”
Moscato received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UP in 1968. She later earned a master’s degree from University of California, Los Angeles, and a doctorate in education from Portland State University. She began her nursing career as a Navy nurse at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. She served as a nurse during the Vietnam War, working with amputees and became a specialist in rehabilitation.
She joined the faculty at UP in 1977 as an adjunct clinical instructor. She served in various adjunct teaching and administrative roles until 1993 when she left the University to work as a nurse consultant to health care organizations concerned with organizational and systems issues. She returned to the University is 1996, serving as interim dean for three years. In 2008, she was named associate dean and retired in 2011.
