As part of its mission to foster faculty development and engagement, SOPHIA cordially invites all faculty to participate in its first annual book discussion. Participants will receive a free copy of our text selection, The Slow Professor: Challenging the Culture of Speed in the Academy and will convene on Thursday, January 12, at 10:30 a.m., in the Bauccio Commons Terrace Room. Come enjoy coffee and morning snacks together and discuss the premises and provocations of this book.
In approximately 90 pages, The Slow Professor encourages faculty to apply theories of the “slow movement” to academia. Covering topics such as the corporatization of universities, effective work-life balance, and “deliberation over acceleration” both in the classroom and scholarship habits, it promises to foster an engaging and productive discussion.
If you are interested in receiving a free copy of the text and participating in the discussion, contact Cara Hersh at hersh@up.edu by Friday, December 2. Due to SOPHIA’s budget, we ask that you only request a book if you plan on participating in the discussion. You will receive The Slow Professor in campus mail and we look forward to seeing you in January.
Our thanks go to provost Tom Greene and dean Michael Andrews for co-sponsoring this event.
