Last year, in partnership with Open School, the School of Education launched the OMAT Program, a two-year master of arts in teaching (MAT) residency program. Open School is a 7th-12th grade college preparatory and leadership alternative school in east Multnomah County. The OMAT Program prioritizes the recruitment and development of teachers of color to better represent the diversity of local schools, but accepts applications from all pre-service educators with a calling to work with marginalized youth. Applications to begin the OMAT program in Summer 2016 are due by March 1, 2016.
Faculty and staff who know students that would like to enter the teaching profession and also have a calling to work with disconnected and struggling youth are encouraged to share information about this program with them. For more information, go to www.education.up.edu and then “Graduate Programs” or contact Rich Christen (christen@up.edu) or Anne Rasmussen (rasmusse@up.edu).
