University of Portland President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has announced the appointment of Casey Shillam as dean of the School of Nursing, effective December 1, 2018. Shillam, who has been a faculty member since 2006, most recently served as interim dean of the School of Nursing since former dean Joane Moceri’s retirement this past summer.
Shillam’s UP career began when she was hired in 2006 by dean Terry Misener to serve as an instructor. Upon completing her doctorate, she became an assistant professor of nursing until accepting a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Davis. She returned to UP in 2015 as associate dean after serving as the founding director of the nursing program at Western Washington University in Bellingham. She holds a bachelor of arts and letters from Portland State University, and bachelor, master of science, and Ph.D. degrees in nursing from Oregon Health & Science University. She was selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Executive Nurse Fellows program and completed the fellowship in September 2017, and has served for two terms on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Health Policy Advisory Council.
