A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 N. Rosa Parks Way, for retired University of Portland staff member Debbie MacKinnon. A UP employee for more than 25 years, MacKinnon passed away surrounded by family members on August 1 after a brief battle against cancer. She was 71. During her time with UP, MacKinnon was the office manager for the College of Arts & Sciences, dutifully serving the Theology, History, and Political Science departments from her familiar fourth-floor location of Buckley Center. She is survived by her husband David MacKinnon; their daughters, Kate MacKinnon Grewell (’06), Kelsey MacKinnon Prenger (’05), and Kayla MacKinnon Brink; five grandchildren; three siblings; and a host of other relatives. Prior to her years at UP, MacKinnon began her career with Fred Meyer stores before moving to US Bank for several years, and later serving as director of religious education at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
