Cheryl Sorenson Named Women’s Basketball Head Coach

sorensonsliderCheryl Sorenson, a Portland native who has spent the past three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach, has been named head coach of the University of Portland women’s basketball program. Sorenson replaces long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years at the helm of the Pilots. She is the fifth head coach in the program’s 34-year history. Jon Stanfill, Theology, has been elected Mayor of Kalama, WA. Prior to his election, Stanfill served on the Kalama City Council for the last six years.

Simon Aihiokhai, Theology, was presented with the St. Monica Award by Saint Augustine College of South Africa in October, 2025. Itzel Cruz Megchun, Business, served as an International Advisory Board Member for the FARQ International Advisory Council Sessions. November 3-5, 2025.

Rachel Wheeler, Theology, published “Reflections on the Study of Christian Spirituality: Gratitude for the Past, Discernment of the Present, and Hope for the Future,” Spiritus 25, no. 2 (2025): 221-261. Wheeler also presented “Ecospirituality: Nurturing Spirituality and Faith Practices in the Context of Climate Chaos.” Presentation for a class at the Central Seminary (Overland Park, KS) entitled “Faith Leadership in the Context of Climate Change.” October 14, 2025

Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, presented 6, one-hour invited leadership presentations for the European Leadership Programme in Brussels, Belgium. Houglum also provided individual leadership coaching sessions for many of the programme’s Leadership Fellows. The European Leadership Programme draws emerging leaders from across Europe and beyond (such as Philippines, Brazil, Lebanon, and Morocco) to participate in a five-month leadership development programme where participants also work in institutions such as the European Parliament, the European Commission, NATO, the United Nations, and various embassies and NGOs. October 19-20, 2025.
