All faculty, staff, and students are invited to view a display looking back to January 1951 when the University of Portland became fully co-educational and admitted women to all of its programs. Before that date, women could only enroll in two programs: nursing (starting in 1934) and music (starting in 1947). With the increase of co-eds on campus, the University’s first residence for women, Villa Maria Hall, was built in 1957 and Mehling Hall followed in 1964. The display was created by the University Museum and is located in the display case across from the Shepard Freshman Resource Center on the first floor of Buckley Center.
Campus community members are also invited to view historical nursing artifacts from the museum in a display created by the School of Nursing. The display is located outside of the nursing department offices on the third floor of Buckley Center.
