Peter Pappas, education, and his students have released a new iBook, Exploring History: Vol III, available free at iTunes in 51 countries (also as a static pdf). It joins volumes I and II, which have more than 13,000 downloads from around the world.

Barb Braband and Kaye Wilson-Anderson, nursing, presented “Evaluation of Memory Book Interventions with Orphaned Children in India, Kenya and South Africa” at the 43rd Sigma Theta Tau International Biennial Convention on Nov. 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Braband also attended the workshop, “Integrating Education in the Arts and Humanities with Education in Science, Engineering, Technology and Medicine,” sponsored by the Board on Higher Education and Workforce of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington D. C. on Dec. 2.

The new book by Christina Astorga, theology, titled Catholic Moral Theology and Social Ethics: A New Method, won third place in the Catholic Press Association of America and Canada Book Awards for 2015. Her book also won the College Theology Society Best Book Award of 2014.

Christin Hancock, history, in conjunction with the Oregon Historical Quarterly, co-hosted a symposium at the Oregon Historical Society on the History of Birth in Oregon on Tuesday November 17, 2015. In addition, she presented a paper titled, “Klamath women, Birth, and the federal policy of Termination,” and served as commentator for the research presentations.

Ami Ahern-Rindell, biology, attended and presented at the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference held October 27 – 30 in Melbourne, Australia. She presented with colleagues from the U.S. and Australia at the symposium “Assessing Undergraduate Research: What We Can Learn from Assessment at Multiple Levels?”

Heather Dillon, engineering, presented “Updating the LED Life Cycle Assessment” (with Ross, C.B.) at the U.S. Department of Energy Solid State Lighting Technology Development Workshop, Portland, Ore., Novem- ber 2015. She also presented “Thermal Analysis of MR-16 LED Lighting” with Michael Beck.

Giannia Reyes-Giardiello and Matthew Warshawsky, international languages and cultures, participated in the 113th annual conference of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), which was held in Portland November 6-8. Reyes-Giardiello presented “Masculinidad y canabalismo en Somos lo que hay y We are what we are,” and Warshawsky presented “Conflict, Contradiction and Convivencia: The Precarious Position of Jews in the Literature and Life of Medieval Christian Spain.”

Kimberly Ilosvay, education, presented “Material matters: What teachers have to say about the curriculum” (with Villagomez, A., Landon-Hays, M.) at the meeting of National Council of Teachers of English, Minneapolis, Minn., November 2015. She also presented “Opportunities in international education” as moderator/chair, International education committee, convocation conducted at the meeting of Kappa Delta Pi, Orlando, Florida, October 2015.

Seniors Gisela Gonzalez-Montiel and Ryan Bergio won second prize in the Analytical Chemistry Division for their poster presentation, “XRF and Raman Analysis of a 15th-Century Painting in Mallorca, Spain,” at the Second Annual Undergraduate Poster Symposium, sponsored by the Portland section of the American Chemical Society, held at Portland State University on Sunday, October 25. Faculty sponsors and co-authors were UP chemists Valerie Walters, Ray Bard, and Ronda Bard. Preliminary spectroscopic analysis of the triptych was accomplished in July, 2015, as part of the University’s Pollentia 2015 expedition, directed by Fr. Richard Rutherford, C.S.C., emeritus theology. Lorretta Krautscheid, nursing, presented “Helping Nurses Heal, Lead and Learn” at Seattle Pacific University, Sigma Theta Tau Psi-at-large Chapter Meeting on November 7, 2015. She also presented “Moral distress and associated factors among baccalaureate nursing students” at the Undergraduate Research Celebration, University of Portland, with student co-presenters Conor Livingston and Austin Smith in November 2015.

Eric Anctil, education, gave a talk entitled, “Experiential Education and Technology in the 21st Century: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities” at the 2015 Annual International Association for Experiential Education Conference in Portland on October 23.

Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, received the biennial Lilly Fellows Book Award, along with co-editor Tom Landy, for their Becoming Beholders: Cultivating Sacramental Imagination and Actions in College Classrooms, published by Liturgical Press. The Lilly Award honors an original and imaginative work from any academic discipline that exemplifies the central ideas and principles animating the Lilly Fellows Program: faith and learning in the Christian intellectual tradition, the vocation of teaching and scholarship, and the history, theory or practice of the university as the site of religious inquiry and culture.

Elinor Sullivan, biology, had her paper, “Maternal high-fat diet and obesity impact palatable food intake and dopamine signaling in nonhuman primate offspring” (coauthored with Rivera HM, Kievit P, Kirigiti MA, Bauman LA, Baquero K, Blundell P, Dean TA, Valleau JC, Takahashi DL, Frazee T, Douville L, Majer J, Smith MS, Grove KL) selected as a winner of the 3rd annual Obesity Journal Symposium at ObesityWeek; she presented it at the Annual Meeting of The Obesity Society in Los Angeles, California, on November 4; and the paper was published in the November issue of the Journal of Obesity. The paper included a student coauthor, Luke Douville.

Residence life staff members Mike Wode, Joe Burke, Chris Haug, Sarah Meiser, and Molly Cullen presented at the Northwest Association Student Affairs Professionals (NWASAP) conference on October 25-27 in Sunriver, OR. Wode, Haug, and Burke presented “The Power of Pastoral Conversations: Addressing Low-Level Incidents in a Low-Stakes Environment.” Haug also presented (with Debi Haug) “Navigating a Student Affairs Career as a Spouse and Parent.” Meiser presented “Transitioning from Residence Life to Housing Operations,” and Cullen presented “Leadership in Context: Professional Development for Student Leaders.”

Molly Hiro and Lars Larson, English, had articles published in a comparative literary studies journal based in Kerala, India (Pursuits 13.1, Aug-Sept. 2015). Hiro’s article is “Black Enough? African American Writers and the Vernacular Tradition” and Larsen wrote on “Routes and Roots: American Literature as a Means of Understanding Contemporary Space and Place.”

Sarina Saturn, psychological sciences, presented a workshop at Unfold Studios on “Building Trauma Resilience with Living Yoga,” on November 1. Unfold Studios is an organization that brings the study and practice of yoga to children, youth, and adults in correctional facilities, drug treatment centers, and behavioral/mental health facilities. UP alumna Kristina Houck was also a leader in the workshop.

Gary Mitchell, business, is featured in the fall issue of OnTrak Magazine, the on board magazine for west coast AmTrak routes. The feature spotlights his role as coach of Team Axis, a group of thirteen high schoolers in Lake Oswego who created an award-winning robot. Team Axis competed against 127 international teams, taking home the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge award for mastering robot intelligence in April. Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., and Karen Eifler of the Garaventa Center provided a plenary address for the Faith, Film and Philosophy Conference hosted by the Faith and Reason Institute at Gonzaga University on October 22. Their talk was called “Love and Mercy in the Maelstrom: Family Relation-ships in Contemporary Cinema.” They also served as discussants following a screening of the film “Whiplash” at the conference.

Ami Ahern-Rindell, biology, has a chapter entitled “An Intentional and Facilitative Student-Centered Approach to Enhance Inquiry-Based Learning Utilizing Authentic, Hypothesis-Driven Research” published in the text Innovations in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, Volume 4: Inquiry-Based Learning for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Programs by Emerald Press, International. The chapter is based on how she brings authentic research experiences into her genetics lab course, BIO 333, by involving students in creating new knowledge pertaining to her own research program.

Anissa Rogers, social work, was recognized for her role as a mentor by the Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education at the Annual Program Meeting for the Council on Social Work Education in Denver, Colo.

Kevin Jones, social work, presented a poster, “What long-term mentoring relationships mean to emerging adults: An interpretive phenomenological analysis,” based on the findings of his dissertation at the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood’s (SSEA) 7th Biennial Conference on Emerging Adulthood. The conference took place October 14-16 in Miami, Florida.

Sr. Carol Dempsey, O.P., theology, spoke on “Hearing the Prophets from the Bowels of the Earth: A Dominican Perspective” as a guest of the Sister Maura Campbell, O.P. Lecture Series on October 19. The theology and philosophy department at Caldwell University initiated the lecture series in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers.

Joanne Warner, nursing emerita, was officially inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) on Saturday, October 17, during the Academy’s annual policy conference, “Transforming Health, Driving Policy,” in Washington, D.C. She was the only nursing leader inducted from Oregon this year. The FAAN’s approximately 2,200 fellows are nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research. Fellows represent association executives; university presidents, chancellors and deans; state and federal political appointees; hospital chief executives and vice presidents for nursing; nurse consultants; and researchers and entrepreneurs.

Eugene Urnezius, chemistry, coauthored “Metal–Halogen Secondary Bonding in a 2,5-Dichlorohydroquinonate Cobalt(II) Complex: Insight into Substrate Coordination in the Chlorohydroquinone Dioxygenase PcpA” (with Schofield, J. Tisha Morrell and Julie Kalnin, education, presented the workshop “Integrating CCSS and NGSS Using Children’s Literature” at the Oregon Science Teachers Association Annual Conference in Bend, Ore., on October 17. They led a group of teachers through an exercise to connect engineering design standards with the common core state standards in English and language arts.

Lars Erik Larson, English, presented a paper exploring how the highway can aid awareness of planetary deep time, using the example of John McPhee’s Pulitzer-winning geologic biography of America, Annals of the Former World (Western Literature Association Conference, Reno, Nevada, Oct. 16).

Bob Butler, environmental studies, was an organizer and lead instructor of an Earthquake and Tsunami Education Workshop in Arcata, California. The workshop was offered by the Cascadia EarthScope Earthquake and Tsunami Education Program (CEETEP) funded by a grant from the EarthScope Program of the National Science Foundation. Participants in the October 9-12 Workshop included 10 K-12 Earth Science teachers, 7 parks and museum interpreters, and 10 emergency management educators from communities on the California North Coast. The workshop was held at Humboldt State University. Butler also presented “Teaching Resources on Cascadia Earthquake and Tsunami Science and Hazards” at the Oregon Science Teachers Association Meeting in Bend, Ore., on October 17.

Larry Larsen, performing and fine arts, designed the scenery for Oregon Children’s Theater’s production of “Junie B. Jones: The Musical” which opens on October 24 in the Newmark Theater at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. The show runs through November 22.

Hannah Callender, mathematics, co-organized and co-chaired a mini symposium on “Individual-Based Models in Ecology and Epidemiology” at the International Symposium on Biomathematics and Ecology Education and Research at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. She also co-organized and co-chaired an invited session on “Advising Student Research Using Individual-Based Models” and delivered a talk during that session entitled “IONTW: An Agent-Based Application for Modeling Infectious Diseases on Contact Networks.” Former UP mathematics major Claire Seibold also presented a poster at the meeting. The poster was coauthored by Callender and current UP students Todd Graham and Rebecca Seibold and was entitled “Modeling Infectious Diseases Through Contact Networks”.

Sarina Saturn, psychological sciences, presented on the biology underlying emotions at the Portland Chapter of Advancing Science in America (ARCS) on October 16. On October 14, she gave a presentation to the Multnomah County Library directors about the biology underlying stressful and prosocial emotions. Saturn served as presenter at the Grand Rounds at Portland Providence Medical Center on October 7.

Matthew Warshawsky, international languages and cultures, gave an invited presentation on October 11 as part of “Cultures of the Sephardic Diapora: A Weekend of Music and Learning,” a program organized by the Judaic Studies Program at Portland State University and the Sephardic Cultural Center of Portland. The title of his talk was “From Jews to New Christians to Secret Jews: An Iberian Geographic and Literary Journey.”
