Ted Eckmann, environmental science, presented “New Vegetation Indices for Assessing the Health of Sedum spp. on Green Roofs” (with Brooke A. Holmes) and published in Proceedings of the Oregon Academy of Science Annual Meeting, Volume LXXV: February 27, 2016, Forest Grove, Ore.

This past fall, the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust did some filming on campus to create a short video to highlight the Murdock College Science Research Program. The video, available here, features Steve Mayer, chemistry, and his student researcher, Eleanor Wilson. Adam Guggenheim, marketing and communications, assisted with the filming.

Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., and Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, provided a 3-day retreat to all the principals and presidents of the Archdiocese of Portland on February 24-26 at Salishan, Ore., on “Living The Joy of the Gospel.”

Tisha Morrell, education, has been appointed to the editorial review board for the Innovations in Science Teacher Education Journal published by the Association for Science Teacher Education.

Bob Butler, environmental studies, was an organizer and lead instructor of a teacher workshop on Cascadia Earthquake Hazards, Engineering, and Preparedness on Saturday February 27 at Highline College in Des Moines, Wash. The workshop was offered by the Cascadia EarthScope Earthquake and Tsunami Education Program (CEETEP) and was funded by a grant from the Puget Sound Energy Foundation. The 28 workshop participants are teachers of Earth Science in Kitsap, Pearce, King, and Snohomish counties.

At the recent conference on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education in Pittsburgh, Valerie Peterson, mathematics, presented “Eliciting Mathematicians’ Pedagogical Reasoning” with collaborators from Florida State and Virginia Tech. Mathematics student Branwen Schaub presented “Reinventing the Multiplication Principle” on research conducted over the summer at Oregon State University.

Richard Gritta, business, has been awarded his third Fulbright. He will be a Senior Fulbright Specialist to the Lithuanian Christian College in Klaipeda, May-June 2016. His previous Fulbrights were a Senior Fulbright Fellowship to the Warsaw School of Economics, Warsaw, Poland (1996) and a Senior Fulbright Specialist award to the Toulouse School of Business in France (2007).

Alice Gates, social work, testified in the Oregon House Business and Labor Committee at the State Capitol on February 15, 2016 regarding SB 1532, a bill to raise Oregon’s minimum wage.

Anne Santiago and Gary Malecha, political science, presented “Integrating Technology to Teach Research Methods” at the Annual American Political Science Association’s Teaching and Learning Conference, February 12-14, in Portland, Ore. The presentation demonstrated revisions to the University’s required Political Inquiry and Analysis course using videos, podcasts, screen-captures, and new sub-disciplinary assignments. The production of technology modules was supported by an 2015 Innovation Grant from the Pamplin School of Business.

Casey Shillam, nursing, serves as a consultant and reviewer for “Competencies and Curricular Guidelines for Undergraduate Nursing Programs: Preparing Nurses to Care for the Seriously Ill and their Families,” an enhanced curriculum in palliative and end-of-life care for nursing schools. Recent grants from Cambia Health Foundation will expand the first wave of dissemination of the training curriculum throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah.

Steve Kolmes, environmental studies, hosted Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon’s Seventh Annual Earth Care Summit, “Renewing Creation From the Ground Up,” in partnership with EMO, on the UP campus. The summmit featured the Rev. Randy Woodley, distinguished professor of Faith and Culture and director of Intercultural and Indigenous Studies at George Fox, as keynote speaker.

Larry Larsen, performing and fine Arts, designed the scenery for Third Rail Repertory Theatre’s production of “Mr. Kolpert.” The production opened February 5 and plays through February 27 at the Imago Theater.

Rich Gritta, business, had his article, “The History of Air Carrier Bankruptcy Forecasting and the Application of Various Models: 1980-2006” published in The History of Insolvency and Bankruptcy from an International Perspective, edited by Karl Gratzer [Sodertorn University, Sweden] and Dieter Stiefel [University of Vienna, Austria], and several more recent articles on bankruptcy have been downloaded over 440 times in the past 6 months and cited over 40 times in countries such as Ireland, England, China, Brazil, Germany, India, Greece, Austria, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nigeria, and others.

Kevin Jones, social work, presented two papers at the Twelfth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability, held January 21-23 at Portland State University. The first presentation was “The Circle of Courage in College: Integrating Native American Cultural Principles into Undergraduate Social Work Education,” and the second was “Sustainable Youth Development in Context: Promoting Equity through Youth Engagement,” with coauthor Rhen Miles.

Laurie Dizney, biology, was interviewed by Utah Public Radio for research that was recently published in the journal Animal Behaviour. The research examined how loss of biodiversity affects behaviors involved in disease transmission. The interview is available on the UPR Science webpage.

On January 14, Alice Gates, social work, took a group of 14 UP social work students to the Capitol in Salem to learn about proposals to raise the minimum wage in Oregon. Marissa Torres, a sophomore social work major at UP, provided testimony to a joint committee of the House and Senate about her experiences being raised by a single parent earning the minimum wage.
