Ami Ahern-Rindell, biology, and research students Raluca Gosman and Kai Seeley, co-authored an abstract and oral presentation that was accepted at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Pacific Meetings held in Hawaii in mid June. Raluca attended the conference and gave the presentation entitled “Y-STR Analysis of Modern DNA in Preparation for Evaluation of Ancient Human  Remains from Mallorca, Spain.”

Holy Cross College in Notre Dame has appointed former UP president Rev. David Tyson, C.S.C., as its president for a five-year term. Fr. Tyson has served as interim president at Holy Cross since April 2017. Prior to taking the helm at Holy Cross, Tyson was director of nonprofit professional development at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. A Notre Dame graduate, Fr. Tyson also previously served as executive assistant to former ND president Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., and later served as vice president for student affairs. He was president of the University of Portland from 1990-2003 before becoming provincial superior of the Indiana Province of Holy Cross.

The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum has announced its 2017 class of inductees, which includes the 2002 University of Portland NCAA champion women’s soccer team. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honors Oregon’s athletic history with a museum and annual induction and awards ceremony. The Hall of Fame’s goal is to inspire participation in sport and foster awareness of the values and life-long rewards gained from this participation.

Laura Mood, nursing, worked for two weeks (May/June 2017) in Myanmar/Burma as a volunteer nursing education consultant for OHSU Casey Eye Institute’s SE Asia Collaboration initiative. Her work involved assessing the current educational program used for Eye Nurse Aid training, as well as the patient care practices delivered by Eye Nurse Aids at Tipitaka Eye Hospital in rural Myanmar. While there she presented an educational seminar titled “Patient education & medication safety” to 66 eye nurse aides and 100 eye nurse aide trainees. She formally presented to OHSU-CEI staff and leadership on her experiences and the work she did to improve the quality of patient care delivered by eye nurse aides. Mood is working on a research proposal and specific quality improvement projects related to this initiative and intends (with appropriate approvals) to involve baccalaureate nursing students in her efforts. Also in June 2017, Mood shared two papers via podium presentation at the Association for Medical Humanities (AMH) conference held at Keele University in England. The papers were titled “Narrative life history: An arts-informed method for understanding disability experience” and “Poetry as a means of exploring empathy in nursing education.”

Aziz Inan, engineering, published his article titled, “A numerical tribute to George Michael,” in The Archer, No. 281, p. 8, East Finchley, London, UK, August 2017. See the article here. Inan also wrote an article about palindrome dates expressed with two-digit year numbers and shared his article with the editor and owner of Fast Copy News Service, located in Atlanta, Ga., and as a result, portions of Inan’s article got published in the “Q&A on the News” column in the Metro section of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper in response to a reader’s question, “I noticed that 7/1/17 reads the same backwards and forward. After 8/18/18 and 9/19/19 when will this happen again?”, p. B3, July 16, 2017.

Alexandra M. Hill, international languages & cultures (German), has been chosen to be the next co-editor of the Women in German Yearbook, the premiere peer-reviewed academic journal for feminist German Studies.

Lauren Alfrey, sociology, had her research on women in the technology industry featured in the “Discoveries” section of The Society Pages, the academic blog of record for sociologists, headquartered in the Department of Sociology at the University of Minnesota. Simon Aihiokhai, theology, presented “New Perspectives on the Role of Women as Ritualistic Agents int he Roman Catholic Church: A Comparative Theological Dialogue,” with Bede Benjamin Bidlack and Tracy Sayuki Tiemeier, at the Catholic Theological Society of America, held in Albuquergue, New Mexico, June 2017.
Sharon Jones, engineering, attended the 2017 Global Grand Challenges Summit in Washington, D.C., July 18 – 20, 2017. She attended with Maggie Ryan ’19, computer science; Sofia Martinez ’19, civil engineering, and Graham Foster ’20, mechanical engineering. The 2017 summit is the third in a collaborative series sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It was held in conjunction with the inaugural K–12 FIRST Global Challenge. It focused on the four themes of the NAE Grand Challenges: Engineering: Sustainability, Health, Security, and Joy of Living, as well as education and public engagement.

The Board of Directors of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association has selected 30 undergraduate/pre-licensure and graduate students to receive the APNA Board of Directors Student Scholarship. University of Portland nursing student Kyle Doty ’19 is among the recipients selected from hundreds of applicants based on academic merit and dedication to psychiatric-mental health nursing.

 Stephanie Salomone, mathematics, has been awarded a $300,000, 3-year NSF grant to improve STEM teaching on the Bluff. She will be joined in the project by Valerie Peterson (math), Carolyn James (math), Eric Anctil (education), Tara Prestholdt (biology), and Heather Dillon (engineering).
Jeffrey Gauthier, philosophy, presented “Alternative Approaches to Prostitution In the Law” at the 33rd Annual International Social Philosophy Conference, Loyola University, Chicago, July 14, 2017.
Barbara Braband, Rebecca Gaudino, and Anissa Rogers recently learned that they are the recipients of the 2017 Innovative Teaching in Social Work Education Award, a national teaching award given jointly by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and SAGE Publishers. The three of them have been collaborating the last several years on pedagogical methods and research, and submitted that work for the award. It will be presented at the Annual Program Meeting for CSWE in October, where they will give a workshop on their project.

Tammy VanDeGrift, engineering, presented a paper “Helping First-Year Engineering Students Select a Major” (with co-author Sherry Liao) at the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, June 2017. VanDeGrift and Caitlin Cairncross, engineering, presented a poster “Using Assessment to Continuously Improve the Retention & Persistence of At-Risk Engineering Students” (with co-author Sharon A. Jones) at the NSF grantees poster session at the same conference.

Sr. Angela Hoffman. O.S.B., chemistry, attended the Northwest Regional American Chemical Society meeting in Corvallis at OSU on July 25-28. She organized the student poster session, served as organizer and presider at the “Breakthroughs in analytical chemistry & natural products” symposium, and presented “Antibiotics by soil actinomycetes from an ancient Roman archeological site,” coauthored with Ed Valente.

Michael F. Andrews, McNerney-Hanson Endowed Chair in Ethics, served as conference director for the International Association for the Philosophy of Edith Stein Fourth Biannual Conference (University of Portland), June 8-10, 2017. He serves as vice-president of the international organization. Over fifty scholars attended the Conference from eleven countries Scholars met on campus for three days to debate and engage various aspects of Edith Stein’s philosophical and theological thought through twenty-seven sessions and extended conversations in German, Italian, French, Spanish, and English.

Aziz Inan, engineering, published his article titled, “10 brainteasers to celebrate Martin’s birthday,” in the Steubenville Herald-Star on June 11, 2017. Last week, June 7 marked the centennial birthday of Italian–American singer, actor, comedian, and film producer Dean Martin, who was born in Steubenville, Ohio on June 7, 1917. Susan Stillwell, nursing, presented a poster, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Audio Feedback,” at the Teaching Professor Conference Cutting-Edge Learning for Exceptional Educators, St. Louis MO, June 2-4, 2017.

Tammy VanDeGrift, engineering, was an invited senior panelist for the workshop Launching Academics on the Tenure-Track: An Intentional Community in Engineering. She provided mentorship for post-docs and early career women faculty in electrical engineering and computer science. She served on three panels: mentoring, mastering teaching, and navigating organizations and tenure.

Mead K. Hunter, performing and fine arts, presided over The New Harmony Project’s annual new play development conference in Indiana from May  20-June 4. Two of the scripts workshopped at the conference are now scheduled for New York City premieres in the fall and spring.

Alice Gates, social work, presented at the Institute for Social Policy annual conference in St. Louis, Missouri with UP students and graduates Dorian Pacheco ’17, Caitlin Varquez ’17, Emma Martínez ’18, Anaceli Mejía ’18, Catherine Adam ’20, and Nicole Panowicz ’20 on June 3, 2017. The team presented on their year-long project involving community-engaged research on the need for paid family and medical leave as it affects immigrant women and low-income families of color. While in St. Louis, students met up with alumna Janie Oliphant ’13, who coordinated a walking tour of St. Louis with a focus on residential segregation and housing policy.

Bob Butler, environmental studies emeritus, was interviewed for OPB Think Out Loud on Wednesday, May 24, about Cascadia Earthquake Science and Hazards. Mallie Kozy, nursing, and Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, received a Terry Misener Innovation in Nursing Grant to produce, deploy, and study the impact of a series of visual contemplation and meditation videos with people living with severe stress or chronic illness. Sources will include secular, spiritual and religious texts and images and harp music composed specifically for this project.
