Ami Ahern-Rindell, biology, was invited to contribute a case study titled “An International and Multidisciplinary Research Collaboration in the Ancient City of Pollentia in Mallorca Spain” to a chapter pertaining to international undergraduate research in The Cambridge Handbook of Undergraduate Research to be published later this year by Cambridge University Press. The case study highlights ancient DNA analysis that Ahern-Rindell and her students are conducting on human remains as part of the University of Portland’s Pollentia Undergraduate Research Expedition (PURE) Program, a collaboration between UP faculty-student teams and a group of Spanish archeologists/anthropologists and their students to help excavate the Roman city of Pollentia dating from 123 BCE, located on the Island of Mallorca.

Jacquie Van Hoomissen has been selected by the steering committee of the NSF ADVANCE Partnership project (Advancing STEM Careers by Empowering Network Development) to join the inter-institutional peer mentoring network of Administrators in the Northwest region. As a member of an Administrator Alliance, she will work with teams to evaluate how campus policies and practices impact professional advancement and leadership development of a diverse faculty in STEM fields. The goal of the program is to reduce institutional obstacles to advancement for women in STEM fields, create more equitable communities, and foster the retention and advancement of a diverse STEM faculty population.

Stephanie Salomone, mathematics, organized and hosted the Western Regional Noyce Alliance Annual Conference, Feb. 21-23, 2020, in Portland, OR. The conference was funded by the National Science Foundation as part of the WRNA grant, and Salomone is the principal investigator on the UP subaward. A mix of 240 pre-service and in-service K-12 STEM teachers and higher education faculty working on teacher preparation from 10 Western states participated in the conference, which focused on networking, professional development of STEM teachers, and retention of teachers of STEM in high-needs schools and school districts. The Portland conference is the second in a series of 3 annual meetings and is part of a larger comprehensive school-year and summer professional development program for STEM teachers working with our most vulnerable youth.
