Jacquie Van Hoomissen and Sarina Saturn co-led a collaborative of faculty who are participating in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Inclusive Excellence Grant Competition for $1,000,000 to support inclusive excellent in science higher education. They recently learned that the UP collaborative was selected as one of only 108 campuses to participate in the next phase of the competition. They will be participating in an HHMI supported learning community to further understand how to make our campus more inclusive.

Elizabeth Lee, institutional research, accepted an invitation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) to serve a one-year term on its Data Council. This representative team of higher education leaders will advise UP’s regional accreditation agency on advancing equity-centered transformation at NWCCU’s 163 member institutions using data-informed approaches. Tammy VanDeGrift, Shiley School of Engineering, presented “Supporting and Teaching Students at Liberal Arts Colleges in Online Courses” at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, Northwestern Conference (virtual but hosted by North Idaho College) on October 3. Alice Gates, social work, was an invited panelist in a two-part conversation series titled Social Workers 4 Justice in Academia. Co-sponsored by YSocialWork, the Social Justice Initiative at Bryn Mawr College, and University of Maryland, the event featured academics from across the U.S. engaged in social justice pedagogy and practice.

Andrew Lafrenz, integrative health and wellness, was the lead epidemiologist for investigating a large, multi-county COVID-19 workplace outbreak, September 17-23. Limited secondary transmission occurred due to investigations of the COVID-19 Response Team.\

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering, published his article titled, “In memory of Kenny Rogers on his 82^nd birthday,” as a letter to the editor in Northside Neighbor Newspapers published in Marietta, GA, on August 21, 2020. Mr. Rogers died this year in Sandy Springs, GA, on March 20, 2020.

Terence Favero and Allegra VanderWilde, biology, published “Reducing Stress Fractures in Female College Distance Runners” in the August 2020 edition of Training and Conditioning. Allegra won the 2020 Outstanding Graduating Senior in Undergraduate Research Award and is the 23^rd undergraduate with whom Favero has published.
