New Duties For Fr. Art Wheeler

wheeler copyRev. Art Wheeler, C.S.C., has indicated to the provost that he would like to return to the history faculty on a full-time basis beginning with the 2015 fall semester. He currently serves as assistant to the provost and director of the Studies Abroad Progam.

In his 20 years as study abroad director, Fr. Art has been relentless about adding programs and encouraging students to study abroad, and now about one-third of UP students have studied abroad at some point in their academic programs. He has also served as associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and was a long serving chair of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Athletics. Father Art has  consistently taught classes while serving in administrative roles. He won the Culligan Award, the highest award for faculty at the University of Portland, in 2005, and was recognized with the Dean’s Award for Leadership in 2012. He is a well-known advocate for students and his counseling and advising services have been influential in students’ lives for many years.

UP No. 9 in Studies Abroad

Sam_Gavin_and_Kevin copy copyThe University of Portland is ranked 9th nationally among its peer institutions in students studying abroad for a long-term duration, defined as more than one academic semester. The rankings are part of the “Open Doors Report on Interna­tional Educational Exchange,” conducted by the Institute of International Education. The University had 40 students study abroad long-term in 2011-12, placing the school 9th overall and in the top 15 of the list for 13 consecutive years. Many of the 40 students who studied abroad long-term participated in the landmark Salzburg program, which began in 1964 and is the oldest and most popular study abroad program at the University of Portland. Academically, the Salzburg program is centered on yearlong courses in art history, German, and music that are supplemented by tours to France, Greece, and Italy. The program is notable for its continuity – four faculty members have served for more than 35 years apiece, and legendary housekeeper Frau Strobl has served more than 40 years.

Beyond the Salzburg program, the University offers multiple opportunities for students to explore the world and immerse themselves in new cultures and experiences through academic programs abroad. Students have the opportunity to participate in programs that touch all corners of the globe, including University programs in London, Australia, Tokyo, Rome, Chile, Spain and Ireland and 25 locations worldwide through IES (Institute for the International Education of Students).
