New Faculty/Staff Directory Photos (Sep. 10)

Are you a new or current faculty or staff member who has not yet had their professional headshot taken for the UP Directory?

The Department of Marketing and Communications has scheduled a professional photographer on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

These headshots will also be available to you for personal and professional use.

World Premiere Film Screening of SCARS (Sept. 11)

Join us for the world premiere viewing of SCARS, a movie about a combat medic veteran with PTSD who, upon his return from Afghanistan, fights to save himself and his family’s vineyard. The film is based on the book Scars: The Effects of Post Traumatic Stress on Family, Relationships, and Work, by Fr. Richard Berg, CSC. Fr. Berg and Benn Cobb, LPC, who worked with veterans at Cedar Hills Hospital, will introduce the genesis of the film, The SCARS Project, and The Returning Veterans Project.  

September 11, at 7 p.m., in the Brian Doyle Auditorium, Dundon-Berchtold Hall (DB004).

Reception to follow. Free and open to all.

BEECN Training (Sep. 17)

Did you know University of Portland is a City of Portland BEECN site?

A BEECN is a temporary radio communications site staffed by at least two volunteers after a major earthquake that takes down phone lines. Faculty, Staff, and Students are invited to join the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management’s training so that they could volunteer in the event of an emergency on campus.

Free online training sessions are currently scheduled for August 20 and September 17 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Upcoming Fire Drills (Aug. 26-Sep. 6)

Fire drills will occur in all campus buildings at the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester. Residence halls will have fire drills during the week of August 26. All fire drills in Academic buildings will occur during the week of September 2. Non-academic buildings will have fire drills during the week of August 26 OR September 2.

Faculty and staff should be aware of the evacuation routes for the building that they work in. Faculty should review emergency planning information with students on the first day of class, including building evacuation routes and what to do in the event of a fire or other emergency. Faculty should identify the quickest escape route from their classroom along with a secondary route if available in case the primary route is inaccessible. Faculty should identify a location outside and away from the building where the class can meet to ensure all students are accounted for. On the date of the fire drill, faculty should instruct students to meet at the designated location and wait outside the building until they are granted permission to return to the building. Avoid gathering directly outside the building and instead move away from the building.

Additional information on fire safety including egress maps is available here. Faculty and staff are required to exit the building in the event of a fire alarm. All fire alarms should be treated like a real emergency. 

Pacific International Academy Open House (Aug. 28)

Pacific International Academy (PIA) moved to the campus of the University of Portland this summer! We’ve been warmly welcomed to our new home, and now that we’ve gotten settled, we’d like to invite you to join us for an open house. Refreshments will be served, and a number of PIA’s faculty, staff, and students will be in attendance.

Retirement Farewell for Kathleen Staten! (Aug. 28)

Kathleen Staten (Provost’s Office), a member of the UP community for over 25 years, will retire at the end of August.  Please stop by the Dundon-Berchtold Lounge on the 1st floor of DB Hall on Wednesday afternoon, August 28, 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. to wish her well!  Light refreshments will be served. 

Vandana Shiva In Person at UP for the 2024 Zahm Lecture! (Sep. 10)

Don’t miss this special evening with Vandana Shiva, PhD, for her talk “Earth Democracy: The Democracy of All Life.” Earth Democracy connects us through the perennial renewal and regeneration of life – from our daily life to the life of the universe. It is the universal story of our times, in our different places and pulsates with the limitless potential of an unfolding universe even while it addresses the real threats to our very survival as a species.

Shiva is the author of over 20 books and was identified by Time Magazine as an environmental “hero” and by Forbes Magazine as one of the “Seven most Powerful Women on the Globe”. Shiva is a scholar, environmental activist, ecofeminist, and food sovereignty and anti-globalization advocate based in Delhi.

Looking for clarity in supporting students?

Supporting our students is a practice that is always changing with our campus culture and student needs. If you’ve ever wished you could get regular updates about or find opportunities to be involved in structured collaboration around student support practices, we have solutions!

This year, the Student Wellness Promotion team is launching a newsletter and collaboration team so folks around campus can get information and give input about effective student support practices. The newsletter goes out monthly and contains answers to FAQs, information on timely programming, and tips for boundary setting/self-care so you can lead by example. The collaboration team meets monthly (with additional options if this is not within your capacity) to discuss student wellness outreach relating to alcohol and other drugs, violence prevention, mental health, and other prominent mental health topics.

Regular Wellness Events for AY 24-25

The Wellness Center is adding several recurring events to their regular programming offerings: Recovery Meetings, Guided Meditations, and Friday Strolls.

Recovery Meetings are open to Students who are exploring recovery from substance use, self-harm, eating disorders, and mental illness. The meetings occur in the Orrico Lower Level Breakroom on Fridays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. This is a space for students to share and reflect on their experience, and participate in activities that help with skill-building relating to recovery.

Guided Meditations are open to ALL students, staff, and faculty members. They will occur on Thursdays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the Terrace Room.

The Friday Stroll will be an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to gather to go on a walk together from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. (whether we use the full time will depend on the length of the walk) on the Last Friday of each month. This group will meet outside of Orrico Hall.
