Interested in providing engaging opportunities for local K-12 students and educators, or for UP students and other community members? Please consider adding your name to the STEM Education and Outreach Center Mailing List.  Please share what kinds of opportunities are of interest to you as we transition back to on-campus programming. Faculty and staff are welcome to share their interests, and we would love opportunities to integrate work from non-STEM fields into STEM learning. The University of Portland is set to become the newest member of the Lilly Network of Church-Related Colleges and Universities. Established in 1991, the Lilly Network addresses issues of common interest to institutions in church-related higher education. The Network’s members (including the University of Notre Dame, Boston College, and many other Catholic and Christian institutions) explore the relationship of Christianity to the academic vocation and strengthen the religious character of colleges and universities through a variety of grant opportunities, fellowships, conferences, workshops, and programmatic initiatives. Lilly Network membership will further enhance the lived expression of UP’s mission as a Catholic, Holy Cross academic institution.

Minnesota poet Anders Carlson-Wee joins us for a reading at the UP Bookstore at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Sporting a vagabond soul (having train-hopped and bicycled across the length of America multiple times), he was taught by the likes of poets Dorianne Laux, B.H. Fairchild, and Mark Jarman. His work probes the subjects of toxic masculinity, the rewarding risks of mobility, the brutality of brothers, and the kindness of strangers. Learn more about him here. All first-year students and their faculty guides will be spending time this week considering the Core Habit of Historical and Global Consciousness. Several readings and videos contribute to this conversation: Peter Stearn’s Why Study History?, Marlene Daut’s Inside the Kingdom of Hayti, “the Wakanda of the Western Hemisphere,’” its associated brief video The First King of Haiti, and a forum discussion of the global events that shaped our grandparents, our parents, and our own selves. This wraps up the first water-ski tour of the new Core Habits; the final seminar meeting will open up the question of how a UP education rooted in this Core Curriculum can form people equipped to bring the Catholic, Holy Cross charism of HOPE to our bruised, blessed world.

The Public Research Fellows program is excited to announce the launch of an oral history/archive project, “College after COVID: Archiving the Present to Envision UP’s Futures.”

Our interdisciplinary working group aims to collect and archive stories and experiences of UP community members at a singular moment in the University’s history. As we return to something closer to “normal” campus life after more than a year of COVID-related disruption, we are eager to document and learn about the experiences of students, staff, and faculty both during the months of remote work and learning, as well as at this moment of return. In addition to creating an archive of stories for the future, we also plan to craft humanities-oriented solutions to the problems and challenges of college in pandemic times. Students, staff, and faculty can participate in our archive project in multiple ways: from being interviewed for a short documentary film, to conducting short interviews via our at-home toolkit, to joining one of our College after COVID conversations (to be held early in Spring semester).
