Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group (FILDG) Meeting (Sep 22)

The first meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group [FILDG] for academic year 2023-24 will be Friday, September 22, 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. in the Murphy Room. We will be discussing excerpts from Rebecca Solnit’s book Hope in the Darkness: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities, Lydia Polgreen’s “Why Is Everyone Suddenly Listening to a Staple of My Angsty Adolescence,” and the Indigo Girl’s song “Prince of Darkness”.    

All readings (and link to YouTube of “Prince of Darkness”) are on the FILDG page of the Garaventa Center website. 

All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. 

Looking for a disability community at UP?

Hello, everyone! I am Sarah Nuxoll, and I work in the Clark Library. For the past two years I have been gathering together with other fantastic UP employees as part of the UP employee Disability Affinity Group. If you identify as having any type of disability (mobility, sensory, learning, psychological, emotional, trauma-related, chronic illness, or others) and are looking for a community to connect, advocate, support each other, and collaboratively brainstorm together, please reach out! Names of group members are kept confidential within the group. 

We understand that the word “disability” means many things to many people and can be seen negatively. In the Disability Affinity Group, we are reclaiming disability in a positive way, to build disability culture and pride. I feel and honor our unique creative processes, our wisdom born of lived experience, and our profound ways of making meaning in a chaotic world.

Gichi-Mookoman: A Concert & Conversation with Renegade Opera (Sep 5)

Co-founders of Renegade Opera, Danielle Jagelski (conductor/composer), Elliot Menard (mezzo soprano), and Madeline Ross (soprano) bring artists from Renegade’s upcoming opera, “Adam’s Run” for a concert and discussion highlighting tools to build a more ethical, collaborative, and sustainable music community. Danielle, a citizen of the Oneida Nation and Red Cliff band of Ojibwe with mixed Polish settler heritage, will discuss her work as a conductor and composer and how her Indigenous identity informs her practice. Madeline Ross and Elliot Menard will perform with Colleen Bernstein from Danielle’s song cycle, gichi-mookoman aki.  

Mago Hunt Recital Hall, 7 p.m. Free and open to all.
