$444,000 Phillips Gift

The University has announced a RISE campaign gift of $444,000 from the late William Isaac Phillips, a 1950 graduate in physics who passed away in January, 2012. His gift will establish a scholarship fund in the College of Arts and Sciences. The gift includes a previous one announced by the University in September from the estate of Phillips.

Born in Bell, Calif., Phillips served in the U.S. Navy World War II and attended the University of Portland on the G.I. bill, graduating with honors in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He began his career as a sales representative with C&H Supply Company in Seattle. In 1966, he established Western Technical Sales with a home office in Bellevue, Wash., and later opened offices in Portland and Spokane. He and his wife Marilyn lived in La Conner, Wash.

The gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million over the next several years, one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university. $100,000 Schneider Gift

University of Portland has announced a RISE Campaign gift of $100,000 from the George and Virginia Schneider family. Half of the gift enhances the existing Molly Hightower Scholarship. The other half establishes the Schneider Family Endowed Nursing Scholarship, designed to help deserving nursing majors who demonstrate financial need. The scholarships represent a longtime interest in and dedication to three areas that Virginia and her late husband, George, championed through their lives: Catholic education, community service, and health care.

The Schneiders have long-standing ties to University of Portland and to the Portland community. One of their children, Ginger Corrada, graduated from the University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. The Schneiders’ granddaughter, Emily Corrada, is currently a senior nursing student.

The Schneiders’ gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which seeks to raise $175 million over the next several years, one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.

$500,000 Hollman Gift

The University has announced a $500,000 RISE Campaign gift from graduates Joe Hollman ’64 and Travis Hollman ’92, who own and operate Hollman, Inc., a Dallas-based company that designs and creates locker facilities worldwide. The gift was part of recent renovations of the Chiles Center, spearheaded by a major gift from University regent Earle M. Chiles. The Hollmans’ gift resulted in the modernization and expansion of the men’s locker rooms for basketball, soccer, baseball, and cross country. Similar work was done for the men’s and women’s coaches locker rooms and the men’s and women’s visiting locker rooms. The gift is part of the University’s $175 million RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $140 million to date and is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.
