The Brian Doyle Scholarship for Creative Writing was established in 2018 by University of Portland regent Ralph Bliquez in memory of Brian Doyle, who passed away in May 2017. One aspiring writer will receive a $35,000 scholarship award for the 2022-2023 academic year. Applications are being accepted from now until April 8, 2022. Faculty and staff are encouraged to reach out to current first-year, sophomore, or junior students to let them know about this exciting creative writing opportunity.

As the University prepares to celebrate Holy Week, Campus Ministry invites the community to join us for a bevy of prayer, liturgies, and Mass opportunities. Holy Week begins with the Celebration of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, April 10. Masses with the blessing and distribution of palms will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Extended hours of Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered on Tuesday, April 12, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. In collaboration with Karen Eifler in the Garaventa Center, we will offer Visio Divina on Wednesday, April 13, following the conclusion of the 12:05 p.m. Mass. The Paschal Triduum begins on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrated at 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Adoration at the Altar of Repose will be available throughout the night in the Chapel. Good Friday is marked with the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3 p.m., with the Sacrament of Reconciliation available from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. The Easter Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Join us as we welcome three of our students into the Church at that Mass. Easter Sunday Mass of the Lord’s Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to join us in these holiest celebrations of the Christian calendar. Please contact Fr. Campus Ministry will offer extended hours of Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday evening of Holy Week (April 12). Adoration will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available during that time as well. Please consider stopping by to join us in prayer!

The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is pleased to announce the return of Faculty Development Day, which will be an in-person event on May 3. The schedule and number of programs are still to be determined. However, the committee is now accepting proposals for 45-minute sessions on topics related to the keynote theme or on a topic of interest to you and your peers. 

Please submit a session proposal with a title, brief session description, speakers/presenters, and whether you prefer to have it recorded to the FDD Moodle site, by April 13.  For any other requests or questions, please contact TAS Chair Jennette Lovejoy via email: tas@up.edu 

The keynote theme is “Beyond the Bluff: Preparing Students to Thrive After UP.” This faculty development day focuses on helping faculty leverage high-impact practices and career readiness frameworks for student success after graduation.  Many of these concepts are already common across campus, but we can encourage more intentional adoption in curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular settings. The keynote session, delivered by the former Mount Holyoake president and present AAC&U president Lynn Pasquerella, will explore what the future of higher education must look like if we are to prepare students for success in work, citizenship, and life and meet the equity mandate before us. The first breakout session will be a targeted hands-on faculty workshop focused on modeling new applications of career readiness in our professional schools and CAS.

Please join us for the 56^th Annual University of Portland Jazz Festival on Wednesday, April 13, and Thursday, April 14! The guest artist for this year’s festival will be saxophonist Caroline Davis, who will give a master class and perform in concert with the UP Jazz Ensemble each day. All events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Chiles Center. Attendees will be asked to wear a mask in the Chiles Center while attending the festival and to provide proof of vaccination (or UP ID) or a negative Covid test within 72 hours upon entry. In summer 2022, Techsmith will retire their Knowmia video platform. Knowmia is a popular video streaming service often used for capturing lectures and other academic-related video. Information Services will work with Techsmith to migrate our existing Knowmia videos over to our Kaltura Mediaspace platform (available via http://myapps.up.edu).

What should I do until the switch?

Nothing is changing until the end of Spring semester. You can continue to use Knowmia, as you have been, for the remainder of Spring 2022.

What is happening to my current videos in Knowmia?

On May 9, we will freeze operation in Techsmith Knowmia and prepare videos for migration over to Mediaspace. This automated process will take several weeks and will result in all Knowmia videos moving into Mediaspace. We will work with our vendors to update any links to Knowmia videos within Moodle to the new Mediaspace URLs. We hope to make the switch as seamless as possible. 

Where can I learn more about Mediaspace?
Guides and documentation for Kaltura Mediaspace are currently available on our ATSI PIlotsUP page. We’ll be expanding these guides in the coming months.

A friendly reminder for those who bring pups to The Bluff. All dogs must be on a leash while on the University of Portland campus and all dog waste must be cleaned up immediately. 

Animals are not allowed in any campus building, including residence buildings, with the exception of guide or service dogs (see policy), animals used specifically in academic or research programs, or by special permissions given by the University Events staff. Pets may not be tethered and left unattended. Pets may not be left in closed vehicles on campus.

The Archives & Museum has a new PortLog post highlighting the change in technology tools students have used to succeed academically. Today’s students rely on laptops, and the Clark Library is the only location on campus where they can borrow laptops for emergency or semester-long use. The library is part of PilotsGive and raising funds to purchase more laptops for this service.
