Over snacks and libations, we’ll be discussing Garnette Cadogan’s “Black and Blue” and, fresh off a Pulitzer Prize, Mitchell S. Jackson’s Prologue to his book Survival Math. Both are available on the Garaventa Center website at this link, as is the image that will accompany the discussion, “Selma to Montgomery,” a photo by James Karales. Open Meeting of the Disability Affinity Group (Apr. 1)
Allies and folks who are curious about the Disability Affinity Group for UP employees are warmly invited to an open meeting on Friday, April 1, at 2 p.m. with members of the group. This will be a time for chatting, Q&A, and brainstorming together to help support disability inclusion and pride on campus and in our communities. No need to tell us how you are connected to disability unless you want to! Venue still to be determined; weather and technology permitting, we hope to have a hybrid meeting with an in-person gathering on the quad in a shaded spot, with a simultaneous Zoom option. Readings and Lectures Series: Hilary Holladay (Mar. 31)
The English Department’s Readings and Lectures series continues with a reading by poet, journalist, and biographer Hilary Holladay on Thursday, March 31 (7:30 UP Bookstore). Holladay has most recently published the first biography of iconic American poet Adrienne Rich (The Power of Adrienne Rich, 2020). Her previous publications include works on Beat Generation writers and other poets such as Lucille Clifton. She joins us from Virginia for this evening reading and discussion of the writing life. Two hundred tickets are be available to UP staff and faculty for Rock the Bluff 2022. Rock the Bluff 2022 will be taking place March 26 in the Chiles Center with doors opening at 7 p.m. and performances starting at 8 p.m. This year, the performance will feature Neon Trees, GroupLove, and RemK. Staff and faculty can pick up tickets in the Chiles Box Office from noon – 4 p.m. now until sold out. Please bring your ID.
Seeking Nominations for the Oddo Scholarship (by Mar. 25)
Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate students for the Oddo Scholarship. This significant scholarship is awarded each year to one or two students who demonstrate a commitment to learning with and from others through service and community engagement grounded in their faith. This endowed scholarship was established to honor the memory of University of Portland President Father Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C.
