Pope Francis recently called the Catholic Church to participate in a Synod on Synodality, exploring how we are a listening Church that journeys together by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. On Thursday, February 24, Pope Francis will join university students in a livestream conversation hosted by Loyola University Chicago to discuss the salient challenges of our times. Join Campus Ministry for a viewing event in Franz 120–there will be a brief introduction and light refreshments at 9:45 a.m., and the livestream begins at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome. Contact ministry@up.edu with any questions.

Excellence in Service Award Nominations Due Feb. 25
Each year an individual faculty member is recognized for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Recipients of the awards are honored in May at the Faculty Gala.
The service award seeks to identify and recognize faculty members that enhance the UP community, professional communities, and/or the world community through their service and leadership work with students, colleagues, and community members. Examples of excellence in service include:
- A commitment to the University of Portland community
- Participating on department, School, College, and/or University committees
- Leading new initiatives within the department, School, College, and/or University
- Advising student clubs and working with students on non-course-related activities
- Volunteering and working with non-UP community organizations
- Working with professional societies and organizations
Eligibility and selection criteria for the Excellence in Service award are established by the Academic Senate and can be found on the Senate’s website (see “Resources” and “C on C Faculty Awards Criteria and Submission Information”). The selection process includes a formal nomination, the submission of supporting materials by the nominees, final selection by the Committee on Committees, and announcement and presentation at the Faculty Gala.
The deadline for nominations is February 25.
The deadline for supporting materials by nominees is March 31.
Please submit a nomination letter at the Service Award Moodle page.
School of Nursing Seeking Pregnant Volunteers for Prenatal Simulation
The Why: The students are in their second clinical year and currently taking a Gender Health course. We want to prepare the students prior to going to their clinical sites.
The What: We would like to demonstrate how to measure the abdomen and check for fetal heart tones and then allow students to do this as well. Students will also take a history and provide the appropriate education per trimester. You would be the patient in this simulation. You are free to be yourself and give as much as you want of your own history, or you may choose to be someone else (your chance to act!). The students will interview you, measure your abdomen, listen for fetal heart tones, and ask questions. There are 11 students in this class, and the students will work in groups of 2-3, so you will have only one group of students working with you at a time. There are other women volunteering so you will not be alone in the simulation classroom. You may bring a support person, partner, or friend.
The When: Saturday, March 19, 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., Third Floor, School of Nursing, Buckley Center, University of Portland. You will not need to stay for the full amount of time.
The School of Nursing will compensate you $50 for your assistance with this class. You will need to complete a W-2 or W-9 form, invoice, and informed consent which I will provide for you and then collect once completed for the business office to send you a check.
Please let me know if you have any questions. My email is: scanlon@up.edu
Entrepreneurship Scholars Program Accepting Applications
The Entrepreneurship Scholars Program is now accepting applications from students across all majors and disciplines to join the 2022-23 cohort. E-Scholars is a highly selective program that accepts up to 25 students each year. The year-long academic program challenges students to find their passions, explore outside the classroom, build their network all while developing their own venture. Other benefits of the program include domestic and international travel, working one-on-one with a mentor, participation in Pilot Venture Challenge, and being a member of the E-Scholar network. To learn more and how to apply, click here to watch a short video.
