Sr. Angela Hoffman, chemistry, attended the 251st National American Chemical Society meeting in San Diego March 13-17. She took part in several committee and council meetings and presented a symposium paper entitled “Getting people excited about the science of climate change” for the Division of Environmental Chemistry. She also co-organized and presided at a symposium entitled “Citizens First! Applications of chemistry to real world issues” for the Division of Chemical Education. She accompanied two undergraduate students who presented their research at the undergraduate session: BaoTran Nhan presented “Yew tree extracts as a natural insecticide against tobacco hornworms” and Jake Vanvampen presented “Anti-hyaluronidase activity of various plant methanolic extracts with implications for neurodegenerative diseases”.

Pat Bognar, performing and fine arts, will show her work as part of the third round of Portland Grid Project participants from March 31 to May 1 at the 12×16 Gallery, 8235 SE 13th Ave. No. 5. Her photographs will be featured at First Friday on April 1 from 6-9 p.m. as well, and an artists’ reception will take place on Sunday, April 3, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Carolyn James, mathematics, has been recognized as a NExT fellow of the Mathematical Association of America. Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D. recipients in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. Since 1994 there have been over 1,500 Fellows who have appeared in all capacities in the academic mathematical profession.
