Feb. 26, 5:00 p.m; ReadUP Community Reading Initiative

GreeneAuthor and John Hopkins humanities professor Alice McDermott will be on campus on February 26, 2015, as a guest of the University’s Schoenfeldt Visiting Writers Series. In preparation for her arrival, the provost’s office has announced the annual ReadUP community reading initiative. All University community members—students, faculty, staff—are invited to read McDermott’s novel, Charming Billy, which won the National Book Award in 1999. Copies of the book can be secured at the Clark Library, and the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in the Pilot House will have an array of McDermott’s books for sale at the Schoenfeldt Series book signing on February 26.

All community members will be invited to book discussions facilitated by Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., Garaventa Center, in the Clark Library conference room:

  • Wednesday, February 11, 3:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 19, noon to 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, February 24, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Schoenfeldt Series events will include an author’s reception on Thursday, February 26, from 5 to 6 p.m.; a public lecture by McDermott that night in Buckley Center Auditorium at 7 p.m.; and a book signing immediately following the lecture. ReadUP is sponsored by the provost’s office, the Garaventa Center, the Clark Library, student affairs, residence life, and university relations.

University Singers, Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 4

Choir ConcertUniversity Singers, Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 4: The University Singers and Women’s Chorale will open their new concert season on Saturday, October 4, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. The University welcomes Kathryn Briggs as the new director of the Women’s Chorale with this all-choral program featuring American music, including works by Stephen Paulus, Portland’s own Joan Szymko, and honorary University of Portland alumnus Aaron Copland. “Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater

scenes and revelations“Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater: The performing and fine arts department presents Elan Garonzik’s “Scenes and Revelations,” with performances on Wednesday, October 1 through Sunday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. In 1894, at the height of America’s westward movement, four Pennsylvania sisters must decide whether to forge ahead or to move in the opposite direction as they are haunted by their pasts and face uncertain futures. Faculty and staff can use season passes to reserve complimentary tickets, and students can reserve free tickets for the Wednesday or Thursday shows. Contact the Hunt Center box office at 7287 to reserve your seats, or visit the box office in the Hunt Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Come See The Crab Lab, Oct. 3

Crab LabAll students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to visit the Crab Lab during its open house on Friday, October 3, from noon to 5 p.m., in Swindells 139 and 128, according to Tara Maginnis, biology. With over 500 gallons of saltwater and six species of crabs, there is plenty to explore. Maginnis and her biology research students will be there explaining how the lab works and what kind of research goes on there (and no, they don’t eat the crabs and neither can you).

Constitution Day Presentation by Gary Malecha, Sept. 17

malechaThe policical science department will mark Constitution Day with a lecture by UP political science professor Gary Malecha, titled “Congressional Elections in a New Political Environment.” Malecha will discuss the upcoming 2014 congressional elections and how they might impact presidential-congressional relations and policy which will make up the rest of the Obama presidency. His lecture, free and open to all, is set for Wednesday, September 17, at 6 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 101.

Dan DeWeese Reading, Sept. 22

deweeseAuthor Dan DeWeese will read from his work as the first 2014-2015 guest of the English department’s Readings & Lectures Series on Monday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. His reading is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

DeWeese is the author of a novel, You Don’t Love This Man, and a story collection titled Disorder. He is also founding editor of Propeller, a web magazine of books, film, art, and culture, and of Propeller Books, the magazine’s publishing imprint. He teaches writing and film courses at Portland State University.

Final “Faith In Film” Session

The next and final fall 2012 installment in the Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film series sponsored by the Garaventa Center will be the Woody Allen movie “Midnight in Paris” on Wednesday, November 28.

Hosts Fr. Charlie Gordon C.S.C., and Karen Eifler, education, will precede the screening with comments highlighting themes of grace and transcendence in the film. The event will be held in Shiley Hall room 301 and is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Thematic snacks will be served.

Amy-Jill Levine (Vanderbilt University)

Vanderbilt University’s Amy-Jill Levine will present “How Jews and Christians Read Scripture Differently” on Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. The presentation is free and open to faculty, staff students, and the public.

Levine is the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University and a Professor of Jewish Studies in the Vanderbilt Divinity School. Her work includes the upcoming book Parables: Hearing the Stories of Jesus Again for the First Time (December, 2012).
