To kick off the second half of Spring Semester, UP Tech Talk is kicking off a  brand new season of UP Tech Talk! In this “TechTalk Mini” episode, ATS crew Maria Erb and Ben Kahn talk about media creation tools available for faculty on UP campus. It’s been over a year since the last time we podcasted about media creation on campus and so much has changed or improved in the last year. If you are curious to try out creating media to flip your classroom, engage students in a new way, or just to save time you spend answering the same question over and over, now is a great time to give it a try.

Updates to Our Tools:

Camtasia

UP now has a site license for this popular software, used for screen capture, editing and video production. It’s a very approachable but powerful software tool that faculty can use to create instructional media. Best of all it can now be used on any UP owned computer at no additional cost.

MediaSpace

MediaSpace continues to see heavy usage on campus for the capture, storage and dissemination of video and audio. In the first 6 weeks of Spring Term 2016: 1,156 MediaSpace entries have been played 7,968 times. In terms of new features, our social video portal has seen many upgrades in the last year:

  • Faculty can now use 1-click access to order professional captioning for video accessibility. There is no longer a need for faculty to transcribe videos or work with captioning files. The captions are processed and applied to videos automatically by our service provider when complete. In addition, there is no cost for faculty or departments as ATS pays for professional captioning on academic content.
  • The new CaptureSpace capture client. This is an updated tool that allows simple desktop and voice recordings and uploads the captured video straight to MediaSpace. Perfect for first time screencasters!
  • Interactive video quizzing allows instructors to insert interactive questions or polls into video content to increase engagement and gauge comprehension.
  • The MediaSpace library is now integrated into Moodle. This makes it easier than ever for faculty to deliver video into their online, hybrid or technology enhanced courses.

Explain Everything

Our favorite iPad slidecasting app has continued to see updates and new features and is available on iPad, Android, and Windows 8/Windows 10 devices. We also have new video tutorials available on using the app to create instructional media.

Our App Picks for this week in the Aggregation, Feed Readers and Podcatchers category:

Maria updated her views from last year on Downcast, and recommends TuneIn as her new favorite podcatcher. We also gave a thumbs up to the built in iOS Podcasts app on iPhone and iPad.

Ben recommends Pocket for saving interesting articles to read later.

We also talk a bit in the podcast about how to subscribe to UP Tech Talk. If you are interested in getting started listening and subscribing to podcasts I would recommend checking out this fantastic primer article from EdTech guru Jonathon Wylie.
