Dr. Michael DeVaughn, Dean Pamplin School of Business

The University of Portland named Dr. Michael DeVaughn as the new Dean of Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. School of Business effective July 1, 2021.

The Pamplin School of Business was thrilled to welcome Dr. Michael DeVaughn as its new Dean. Dr. DeVaughn made the transition from Minneapolis to Portland. He served in various leadership roles at the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas. Dr. DeVaughn received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University, his M.B.A. from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to joining St. Thomas, he served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota and enjoyed a successful career in the private sector with corporations including Ralston Purina, PepsiCo, and Fleet Financial Group (now Bank of America).

“I am thrilled to be joining UP as the next Dean of the Pamplin School of Business,” said Dr. DeVaughn about the appointment. “UP’s educational, mission-centered excellence has been on my radar for years, ever since my son was an undergraduate there. As a Pilot parent, I am already a member of the UP family and look forward to the next, exciting, challenging chapter of my engagement with the University.”

Business & Ethics Summer Series

This past summer, the Pamplin School of Business in collaboration with the Dundon-Berchtold Institute, launched a series of summer events under the “Business and Ethics” series umbrella. The offerings included virtual workshops on:

  • “Habits, Values and Virtues” facilitated by the Director of the Dundon-Berchtold Institute, Daniel Mcginity
  • A “Business-Ethics Storytelling Experience” comprised of a panel of business community members sharing their stories on the corporate front
  • Women in Business Ethics Roundtable featuring: Dawn Moore, Intel Corp., Head of Data Center Group; Caroline Brabrook, AVP Michael Baker International; Jennifer Anderson, Nike Global Finance Data Operations Director – Moderated by Theresa Trelstad, Principal Trelstad Communications and Hannah PIck Dundon-Berchtold Institute Program Manager


These Numbers Have Faces

This past fall, UP students teamed up for the second time with nonprofit partner, These Numbers Have Faces (TNHF). TNHF is dedicated to transforming Africa’s tomorrow by educating, equipping, and empowering Africa’s brightest young leaders to cultivate thriving communities. The overall goal of the UP and TNHF project was to facilitate two-way peer learning with UP students and Rwandan students. Project topics included Financial Literacy, Human Relations and Work Ethics, The Power of Personal Beliefs and Their Impact on Community Transformation, and Positive Advocacy and its Impact on the Communities We Serve. Students communicated, collaborated, and connected.


Partnership with School of Nursing (SON)

The Pamplin School of Business has partnered with the School of Nursing to offer a certificate in Healthcare Management. Our Healthcare Management certificate is a blend of analytics, informatics, organization systems, and strategy in the healthcare space. It will provide students with what they need to make a strong impact in this increasingly competitive and complex area. Big data and predictive analytics are imperative in making healthcare management decisions today. This program will provide practical instruction on applications in data analysis, IT management, leadership, management, and the strategic thinking required to keep pace with the changing technological trends and leadership demands of our increasingly complex world.
