The Third Epiphany

October 20, 2012 By Mark

When I taught in Nairobi, Kenya in the late 1980s, one of my students shared with me a saying from his Ugandan village: “If a priest puts a curse on you, curse him back, but if a bishop puts a curse on you, dig your grave.”  While this ominous maxim had nothing whatever to do with the ecclesiology I was trying to teach, it did serve as evidence that bishops were formidable figures in East Africa.  The most formidable bishop I met over there was Serapio Bwemi Magambo, of the Diocese of Fort Portal Uganda.

Fort Portal is a market town near the Rwenzori Mountains – sometimes called the Mountains of the Moon.  It is the home of the Congregation of Holy Cross in East Africa.  The first members of the community to serve there were three newly ordained Holy Cross priests who arrived in 1958 to assist the White Fathers who had established the mission long before.  A Holy Cross priest, Vincent McCauley, was consecrated the first bishop of the newly established diocese in 1961.  Bishop Magambo, McCauley’s successor, was the first African bishop of the diocese.  He held the memory of his predecessor in great reverence, preserving the founding bishop’s old office just as he had left it, as a kind of shrine.  In this Bishop Magambo proved prescient, as Bishop McCauley’s cause for sainthood has since been introduced.  Bishop Magambo was a burly, robust, charismatic man with a deep, booming, resonant voice.  He had an ample waistline in at a time when great girth was indicative of high status.  He had a warm, avuncular personality and exuded sublime confidence in the dignity of his office.

Michael Cameron’s New Book

September 17, 2012 By Mark

Michael Cameron from the Department of Theology has just published a book-length study of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) that analyzes the ancient Latin Church Father’s patterns of reading and teaching the Bible. Drawing on a quote from Augustine about the Old Testament, the book is titled Christ Meets Me Everywhere: Augustine’s Early Figurative Exegesis, and published by Oxford University Press.

Most readers first encounter Augustine’s love for the words of Scripture in his masterwork, the Confessions. Augustine does not merely quote texts there, but in many ways lets Scripture itself tell his story. As he journeys from darkness to light, Augustine figuratively becomes Adam in the Garden of Eden, or the Prodigal Son of Jesus’ parable, or the Pauline double personality devoted to and rebellious against God’s Law.

Theology Welcome

April 29, 2012 By Mark

During his or her college years, a student often begins to ask such fundamental questions as:

•    What is the purpose of this life?
•    Who am I really?
•    How do I relate to the spiritual side of my existence?

Even so, most American students graduate from college with little more than a high school understanding of religion and a Sunday school sophistication in theology and spirituality.

At the University of Portland, students are encouraged to explore these important dimensions of human existence in a way that engages their developing intellects. To support this defining aspect of the University’s mission, the Department of Theology provides an impressively broad range of courses through the University Core, all taught from a Catholic ecumenical perspective.

For students who wish to go beyond the Core courses, there are minors in Theology, Catholic Studies, and Social Justice, as well as a Theology major. Students can also participate in various colloquia and lively debates that the Department sponsors throughout the school year. For those who already have a bachelor’s degree, the Department offers a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, which combines academic rigor with ministerial challenges.

Join us in our efforts to discover new perspectives on our world and new insights into possibilities for meaning and truth.

Sincerely,

Will Deming, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Theology
