The University of Portland Accounting Association (UPAA) has promoted the accounting profession and student achievement in the Pamplin School of Business Association for over a decade. Initially, a small group of students formed UPAA and worked in conjunction with the Career Services Center and local accounting firms to host recruiting events like Meeting the Firms and Speed Networking. Since then the organization has expanded it member base to include more than 35 active members, a regular professional speaker series addressing relevant business issues, and a variety of service projects including VITA program. In fall of 2013 the UPAA became an official petitioning chapter of international information management society, Beta Alpha Psi.
Mission
Community
Building community among the current and former students and faculty at the University of Portland paramount to developing lasting multidimensional relationships that lead to success. Fostering these relationships inspires a recognition of personal interconnectedness that drives integrity, responsibility, and ethical decision making.
Growth
The UPAA believes the learning does not happen only in the classroom. In fact, some of the most important lessons and skills (e.g., leadership) are cultivated through action in practical situations. Members are reminded that being a teacher or mentor provides as many or more opportunities for growth than pupilship. These types of opportunities are provided not only to student members, but alumni, professionals, and community members at large.
Achievement
Developing as an individual requires setting and striving to achieve personal, academic, social, and professional goals. Students are provided with encouragement and a variety of resources to help reach new heights.
Membership
UPAA
There are no official membership requirement to participate in UPAA sponsored events. However, there is a core group of 30 to 40 students that actively participate. These students are often, but not always, business students that are interested or pursuing accounting related majors or professions.
BAP
The University of Portland Beta Alph Psi chapter was founded by 11 Junior and Senior Accounting Students. Membership is expected to grow and to include Finance and Operation Technology majors.
