TechSmith is Gone: The Aftermath Part 1

So you’re all set for the first week of class, more or less. You have your syllabus in Moodle, some assignments ready to go, your gradebook set up. Oops, what’s that weird kind of error message-y thing that’s showing up where a Knowmia video is located on a Moodle page?

You may remember some announcements about the upcoming retirement of TechSmith Knowmia last Spring. This retirement will be complete at the end of August- but fear not your videos will live on in MediaSpace. ATSI is working through the process of updating media links on all course pages. However as you may imagine, this is a time consuming process that will likely take a few more weeks. Once this process is completed, you will find that all of the links to your video content formerly housed in Knowmia now reference their new location in your MediaSpace account.

But, what to do in the meantime if you need a video for your courses?

Worry not- check your MediaSpace account. You’ll see your Knowmia videos there. They have been migrated within the past week so will show up with recent dates on them. If you need to use one or more of these videos within the next week or so, there are two options for updating the linked content on your Moodle pages:

  1. In Moodle, from the “add a resource” dropdown menu pick “Kaltura Video”
  2. Click the “Add Media” button. Your complete library in MediaSpace will display
  3. Choose your video. You’ll have the option of a small, medium, or larger display from the drop down menu
  4. That’s it. Give your video a title. Save and return to your course.

The second option is a little more involved but will work in case the first option is not available to you.

  1. Find your video in your MediaSpace account
  2. Click on it
  3. Click on “Share” and “Embed”
  1. From Moodle, choose “Add a Resource” then “Label”
  2. Hit the “Edit HTML” button <>
  3. paste the embed code into the text box
  4. Click the “Edit HTML” button again to get back to a visual display
  5. AND THAT’S IT. Your video is now properly embedded and looks great

From here, you can delete the unneeded TechSmith links- which will save us time as we work on updates allowing us to get to your other videos even faster!

If you won’t be needing any videos for a while, sit back. In a few weeks, any Knowmia videos you have previously linked in Moodle should be updated with corresponding links in MediaSpace and you won’t need to do either of the above steps.

Please contact ATSI at atsi@up.edu if you run into any issues with embedding or linking to any of your videos. Don’t see your content? Let us know.

If you’re thinking about doing more lecture capture in the classroom this semester, check out these handy quick start guides to using Kaltura Capture or Zoom from a podium computer. If you’re used to using Explain Everything, you will be able to do that too. More resources here on using Explain Everything.
