Students walk the path of the Civil Rights movement and learn about contemporary issues of racism and classism in the South. This immersion is connected with a History course which students may register for as a 1-credit or 3-credit option.

The Interns for Justice program is an 8-10 week summer service opportunity for University of Portland students. Throughout the summer, Interns will serve with organizations who work alongside traditionally under served or marginalized populations. Interns will build deep relationships with the people and communities with which they work, critically examine root causes of poverty and injustice, and intentionally reflect on lived experiences.

L’Arche is an international community of adults with and without disabilities living together and founded fifty years ago in France by Jean Vanier as an ecumenical and inter-religious community with roots in Catholic tradition. Since 1964, young volunteers from around the world choose to live in L’Arche communities for a period of time to learn the “art of presence” and the beauty of friendship with adults with disabilities through its community life. This 8-week immersion will take place in the L’Arche community in Bologna, Italy.

In collaboration with the Shiley School of Engineering, Pamplin School of Business and the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD), the Moreau Center is sponsoring a 9-week summer immersion to East Africa in 2015. Students will be immersed in Kenyan culture and work with grassroots organizations to develop sustainable solutions to important issues facing the local community. Immersion preparation will include regular meetings in the spring with exposure to Catholic social teaching, principles of sustainable development, Kenyan culture, basic language skills, program expectations and safety. The East Africa Initiative is open to all students but sophomore and junior students with some previous travel and service experience are encouraged to apply.

Travel to the US/Mexico Border on Spring Break to learn about immigration, the global economy, environmental and human rights issues. Visit social service agencies, local farmers, legislators, and Border Patrol to examine all sides of immigration issues. The trip may include service projects and home stays with working-class Mexican families.
