Congratulations to our Professor Sophia Tzeng and her colleagues at the Portland-based nonprofit Innovation Law Lab for receiving international recognition for legal innovation.

“Founded in 2014, in response to the mass detention and deportation of immigrants and asylum seekers, the Innovation Law Lab has successfully scaled effective legal representation for immigrants and refugees. The Innovation Law Lab has collaborated with several immigrant and refugee pro bono projects nationally, including the Dilley Pro Bono Project, the Karnes Pro Bono Project, the Berks Pro Bono Project, the Fearless Lawyering Immigrant – Justice Campaign, the Innovation Law Lab Centers of Excellence, and the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative.”
“This year, the Innovation Law Lab created an Oregon Center of Excellence, a collaborative system of pro bono representation for asylum seekers. It also helped launch an Oregon “rights architecture” that brings together all immigrant and refugee resources into a single infrastructure and allocates the most critical resources such as immigrant rights attorneys and policy analysts across a spectrum of allies.”
“This recognition brings needed attention to the power of passion, process, and collaboration to defend the most vulnerable in our world against powerful interests that would undermine the law,” Stephen W. Manning stated in response to the news.
The Law Lab’s legal director, Stephen W. Manning, is one of ten finalists in the “Legal Innovator of the Year” category, which recognizes individuals who have come up with original ideas, have shown the courage to change the way legal work is done, and have had a powerful influence in their industry or wider society.
“I am hopeful that this recognition will help us further scale our work,” added Interim Executive Director Sophia Tzeng.
Award winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on December 11, 2017 to be held at the New York Public Library.
Sophia Tzeng is a professor of practice at UP, her classroom work stems from her business practice. For the last several years, she has served UP as a member of the UP Pamplin Dean’s Advisory Board, adjunct professor at the Pamplin School teaching Social Venture Management, and currently she is halfway through a one-year stint as Visiting Professor/Instructor teaching Strategy Capstone, Leadership, Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovation.
