Meet Sophie Broide, Development Manager for Girls, Inc. and recent alumna of the MBA Nonprofit Management program (’22)

Spotlight Q&A

Please tell us a bit about You (short bio) and what are you doing now (as alumna)?

I currently work at Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest as the Development Manager where I assist with fundraising, event planning, and volunteer management. I celebrated my first year at Girls Inc. at the beginning of January alongside an inspiring group of coworkers that truly bring our mission to life.

Girls Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides afterschool and summer youth mentorship programs. Our mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, with the vision of having empowered girls and an equitable society. Our research-based programs and trained mentors support every area of a young person’s development. This includes youths’ physical and mental health, relationships, academic success, life and workplace skills, and leadership and civic engagement. We help girls believe they are powerful and worthy of success which sets them up for lifelong achievement.

It’s a special feeling to be part of something bigger than myself and I’m proud to work for an organization rooted in female empowerment.

Why did you choose the UP Pamplin MBA Nonprofit?

After completing my undergraduate degree at Loyola Marymount University in 2019, I was still unsure of which direction I wanted to take in my career. I enjoyed volunteering and finding ways to give back to the community which is what sparked my interest in pursuing an MBA.

When I applied to the UP MBA Nonprofit program I didn’t know where it would take me. I knew I wanted to make a positive change in the world and that a graduate degree would push me one step closer to achieving that goal. With help from the Andy and Nancy Bryant Fellowship, I was able to start the program and immerse myself in the world of nonprofit management.

Any advice for someone considering the program?

The best advice I can give to someone is to listen to yourself and trust that you will make the right decision. For me, this program started at a perfect time when I was early on in my career and eager to learn more.

Take time to get to know the other students in your cohort because what you learn from them will be just as valuable as what you learn in the classroom. Listening to my fellow cohort members share their own work experience taught me a lot about the kind of organization I wanted to work for.

You are going to do amazing things both in this program and well beyond it once you graduate. Hold onto that and always look forward to what’s coming next!
