Dave Kolar, Alumni of University of Portland Pamplin School of Business (MBA’91)

What are you doing now?

Currently I am working as Founder & CEO of Portland-based venture-scale startup DINNERSTAR, a technology company connecting restaurants and consumers with the automated “Ultimate Curbside” experience.  This patent-pending mobile-based technology helps restaurants reduce reliance on third-party delivery, opens an emerging and exciting channel of distribution, all at zero cost to the consumer.

Why did you choose UP Pamplin?

UP Pamplin was the go-to MBA option in Portland for a number of reasons.  The extensive and stimulating coursework included the full range of business disciplines, all covered in an intense timeline.  Advanced accounting, marketing and operations courses were a combination that prepared me for the multi-disciplined challenge of running a business.  Manageable class sizes assured that there was accessibility to professors for questions, comments and collaboration.

What advice would you give someone considering an MBA?

Getting an MBA is a choice that includes commitment of time and resources and is not for everyone.  Even so, as a founder of a number of businesses, I can say I’ve used my UP MBA everyday of my professional life.  I would recommend an MBA for anyone eager to advance their knowledge and experience in business, especially for early- and mid-career corporate professionals.  For me, the range and breadth of coursework in this MBA caused the world to open up in new ways.
